.243 twist rate and heavier bullets
Hello: Out of curiousity, does anyone know if the 1 in 10" twist rate of a .243 Winchester will stabilize 115 grain bullets? Thanks.

115gr Barnes original RN, yes. If you load it at 2700 fps or better.

Any other 115 grain NO.

Berger 115 grain Target bullets want a 1 in 8.

107 grain Sierras, will stabilize with a 1 in 8, and will if has enought velocity with a 1 in 9 twist.

Without any fanfare I ever noticed, Remington and Ruger 243s now come with a 1 in 9 twist instead of the long time 1 in 10.

Thanks seafire/ B17G - appreciate the info. Interesting observation on the Remington/Rugers changes, as well.

Hello pagris,

My .243Win., like most, has a 1 in 10" twist. The only bullet it doesn't shoot well is the 100gr.
Mine averages about 1.2" (5 shots/100yds.) The groups are about half of that in the lighter weights. The 95gr. Nosler is supposed to be very accurate although I've never used it. Best wishes.

I have a 6mm-284 that was a heavy-barrel .243 Winchester. It will not stabilize a 117-grain VLD, but is OK with 95-grain Noslers.

Add Savage to the 1 in 9 twist rate in 243.
