A while back I asked the question about the perfect 6.5 case. As a hunting cartridge I think it's the WSM. I took mine out for the first session at the range on Sat. and wow. A touch faster than the Win mag in a short action with no belt. Easy to load for and so far, accurate as hell. We will have to see how the barrel holds up, but I am guessing I will have to wait years to see as I don't plan to shoot more than 100 rounds a year from this rifle. I will also have to wait a couple of weeks to see how it performs on game, but a 125 grain partition at 3300 should kill most anything west of cape buffalo.

I'd go this route. 6.5 mm Super LR Cartridge

Well I have two 6.5s and think they are both great cartridges. One is the 6.5 Grendel and the other is the 6.5x55 Swede. I am still working on a suitable load for my Swede and if I can't find it I will move on to something else in 6.5.

Quintus, which case did you build yours on, the 7mm or 300WSM? I know the shoulders are different.

That 6.5 Super looks just like the 6.5 R-Bar!!! JGS made the super reamer after they made mine! The Super reamer was only approved 10/22/10. Vapo dog was 1/2 way through with my rifle. Vapo Dog delivered my first rifle in march of 2011. It took him over 6 months to get it built. My actual design was done many years ago but put on the back burner while building other wildcats!! roger

The 6.5 Super LR looks like it would be an interesting cartridge. One of the guys I know is in the process of building a 6.5. He is leaning towards the Creedmor as it would be the cheapest for him since the gunsmiths have the reamers already.

It is the 300/270wsm case. I am using W-W 270 brass and it is sizing down nicely. I will be heading to the range tomorrow after The Boys football game with the first go at hunting loads with the 125 grain Partitions. I'll be pushing them with IMR4350 and RL22. Both look like they will be pretty accurate from barrel break in, I'm hopeing RL22 wins out.

If I'm correct, the 300 WSM has a different shoulder to case length than the 270 WSM. Did you have to change the shoulder on your 6.5?

Nope. The 7mm is diffrent from the 270 and 300.

Quintus is correct. They did it for the same reason the 280 is different from the 270 or 30-06. They did not want the 284 bullet going down the 270 pipe by accident, so you can not close the bolt on the 7mm version if chambered in the 270 version.

A quick update, this rifle is ready to hunt. Breakin with 120 grain B-Tips that resulted in the end with very accurate loads with IMR 4350 and RL22. Now zeroed @ 200 with Nosler 125gr Partitions with a 5 shot spread well under 2" at that distance and running in the neighorhood of 3300fps! I hope there is a deer in SD that hasn't died of blue tongue yet, but I should get a close try here in MN in a week.
