I just picked up this Interarms Mark X .25-06. Made in 1979 and has a butchered aftermarket stock attached but it functions perfectly and the metalwork is in great shape for the most part. Wasn't looking for a .25-06 but for what they were asking it'll do- I was really just interested in the commercial M98 action. I am really excited to turn the existing stock into a pattern stock and get it duplicated into some nice walnut. Will need to have some work done on the bolt shroud and handle- I would prefer a 3-position safety and straight(er) handle.

Any suggestions for a 3-pos shroud and handle and who to do it?

I am pleasantly surprised by the trigger after adjusting it based on factory instructions. It was very out of whack when I got it, which was a little alarming, but now breaks pretty clean without much takeup and overtravel. Hope the barrel is good too.

send the barreled acton to Jim Kobe....he will install either a Wisner or a Dakota three position safety and you'll be darn happy with it.

BTW....I have the very same barreled action in a thumbhole stock....it shoots quite well.

Thats right I should have remembered, he isn't too far from me.

I see he has some straddle floorplates for sale too... and that is just what the bottom metal needs.

That is a great start on a 25/06, nothing wrong with any of the metal.
That stock is one ugly handle!

Jim Kobe is a good choice. Wayne Jacobson at AHR did my .375 in connection with a pretty-much complete overhaul.

I was pretty happy when I pulled the stock off, there was just a bit of light rust on the barrel under the stock and it wiped off easily.

The stock is a real ugly stick indeed and I believe its why the rifle was a steal at $200- at that price and this condition it could be in any caliber. Its black walnut under the black stain and ugly enough that you want to chop it up so it'll be perfect to use as the base for a pattern stock. I'll try to keep the stock really trim and sharp, we'll see what kind of walnut I get for duplicating.

I have a Vortex Viper HS 2.5-10x44 scope on order and have 30mm med height Leupold QRW rings on hand so we'll see how that setup works with some good bases, thinking of Warne. If I didn't already have the Leupold rings on hand I'd probably try Talley rings.

I'd give you 200 for it if you leave the scope on and take the stock off.

I’ve never had a Mark X that couldn’t give MOA or less. Be happy to cut your stock or I have several for the MKX.

Personally, I would never ever a three position safety. I’m mostly a stalk hunter, and the two position side safety if most effective when stalk hunting. If I sat in a tree stand, maybe I would reconsider, but for the hunting I do, I want something as close to to a shotgun safety as I can get. Makes for quick shots!

We'll see what happens. I don't forsee this becoming a snap shot rifle since I do most all of my deer hunting now sitting in the same corner waiting for the opportunity. Either way I am not going to leave it with the factory sliding safety.

Safeties are a personal taste thing.
I myself prefer wing safeties, 2 and 3 position wing safeties.
I've converted all my Mausers to wing safeties.
I can't think of a safety I could be faster with as I've been using them since I was a kid and am completely natural with them.

I wouldn't use that stock for pattern stock, most stylist have so much better patterns. I like English patterns, but the American classic is popular as can be..They just usually have too much wood left on them IMO..speaking for myself. I like a 3 pos. safety and I like the Brno mod. 21 safety or its ilk, that drops down to fire on the left side of the gun, it needs modification to be scope friendly, its the fastest of all safety for me..I heat it and bend it to clear a low mounted scope. fantastic caliber IMO..

I forgot to add, its the all time perfect deer caliber IMO..Don't know why I don't still own one..

I meant to say I'll be using the stock that came with it as the basis for a pattern stock. The inletting needs to be redone anyways. Going to hack away lots of it and rebuild it back up. I like to mix the American and European styles together.





The BRNO safety looks cool. I recently saw a HEYM (I think) with a similar system and it felt slick. The 3-position wing safety has grown on me after using my M70 for a few years now.

That is a spectacular rifle, I really like the way it looks trim, lively and fast to handle.

Pretty much any commercial stock for the 98 pattern Mauser will fit. You will have a real quality rifle,

i have a good mk 10 stock i would trade you for a box of speer 150 grain Hot core 30 calibers. (cant find any )

Lil update on this rifle. Got a 3-pos safety installed, I think a Gentry piece. I ended up dumping half a can of Bondo into/onto the stock and re-bedded everything. Did some rough re-shaping on the stock, which is admittedly still FUGLY but it works. Did a camo paint job based on the Van Halen Frankenstrat pattern. Attached one of my old buttpads laying around and mounted a Vortex Razor HDLH 3-15x42 in Talley rings. Fitted a Wisner straddle floorplate to the bottom metal since too.

Have spent some time at the range and it is a laser beam with Federal Fusion 117s. Its a heavy rifle as-is and shoots way beyond expectations. Very gentle recoil. I've done a little hunting with the rifle and have yet to get a shot off, but I lent it to a coworker and he tagged his first mule deer (a big ole doe) out in Wyoming this year with it, so we can say it works.

I believe that either you are mistaken or I am misreading something... The Mark X is an FN copy that was made on FN tooling. Just like any standard M98 they all have the same action hole spacing.

But I could be wrong....

I love rifles like this cheap and with a little work.

They are great for using and not worrying about.

I would not have done a thing to except for bedding and reshaping.

P dog you know that doesn't fly in my safe. Proving it can shoot and fill tags means it is worth restocking.

Just cut up a nice stick of English walnut last night intended for an M98 .308 but I'm thinking of going ahead and putting it on this rifle instead.

Pretty damn nice stock IMO...Good mix, lean and mean, congrats on that one. MY pattern is almost exact other than mine has a European pancake cheek piece..

I've got an early Mk 10 in 25-06; it's been one of my go-to deer rifles for pushing 50 years. used to shoot in the 6's and 7's with the 115 Ballistic tip and H 4831; neither me nor the rifle will do it anymore. Maybe the rifle.

Great luck with it. if you be really humble, Ramrod might rough out a stock for you; he did one for me for an '09 Mauser that was a great job.

I bought a barreled action and put a Roberts or Richard's claro stock. I used this rifle for ground hog hunting in Highland and Bath counties here in virginia until I wore the barrel out. The stock and action are now 375 Whelen.
