Wanted: 5.7x28 drawing
Anybody have or know where I can find a drawing of the 5.7x28 FN round? I'm wondering about the dimensions for possibly building a varmint rifle chambered for it. Looks like it'd do about what a .22 hornet will, but in a rimless bottleneck case.

Let's talk about this.

I've got a msg out to moonova about making brass for this, only in the 4.4/.17cal x 28mm.

He can make them from scratch, but, has to run 50,000 of them. Would you be interested in joining several of us in taking a 1000, or 2000?

Have just sent him a request for prices, I can only use about that many at most.

Send me your mailing address and I'll mail you a case. It will be the 5.7x28 fired, loaded 4-5 times. Fellow in Ankorage sent me a few.

They are: 1.125" long, .950" ti bottom of shoulder, 1" to top of shoulder/base of neck with a radius shaped shoulder that's quite short as you can tell by the numbers, neck is about .150-160" long. Short neck too.

Yes, this in a .22 should nearly equal a hornet.
By reducing it to .17 cal, it will make around 33-3500fps from what I can learn.

Check this site out, it's a small caliber bunch of good ole boys. www.saubier.com

So far I haven't decided on an action. Mostly it's my income problems that waylay these things for me. I've wanted a tiny .17 cal for years and was shocked when Hornady came out the HMR in rimfire instead of centerfire. I wrote and Steve replied that he would not ever produce a centerfire this size. What a damned shame! Shocking to me since he's a bullet maker, I'd sure think he'd want to sell bullets too.

This 28mm case will push a 25-30gr .22 nearly as fast as the HMR does the 17gr .17 pill.

Forgot one thing.

Someone on Saubier mentioned they use a .25 auto shell holder. I just checked my Lee set and there's nothing in this set that small. Too small for a #7 holder. Am sure Lee would have them, but, doubt they'll have dies for it. So far I haven't found dies, but, haven't gotten very far into checking yet either.

Hi George,
Thank you for the help. I just checked Midway, they have RCBS dies in stock and say you need the #45 shellholder for it. It does look like it'd make a really neat .17, I bet a Rem 591 action converted to centerfire would work if you wanted to be creative, or take the easy way out and use a CZ 527 hornet. My address is: Score High Gunsmithing

Thank you for the offer of the case, it'll be fun to see what we can come up with.

Bob Davidson (bobd)is working with one right now. It is a screamer. It will do a little better than a 17Ah with around 10grs of powder.Very comparable to a 17CCM. Do a search on Saubier. He built his on a CZ527. The gun is a repeater. Kevin Weaver (Weaver rifles)has the reamer and did the work. Dave kiff will send you the print via email. I think he wnet with CD4H dies. He will fill you in.

Crusher:

Two things, turn that damned all caps off, ok??

Check this forum out: www.FiveSeven.com

Nothing but guys talking about this cartridge and in the original form as you're interested in.

IF I get to building one, it WILL be the .17 cal version and not the 5.7/.224".

Guess Moonova quit me, won't reply, or hasn't in over a month now.

Thanks,

George

Has anyone considered necking the 5.7 down to 20 caliber? Looks like it would do about 2500 fps with a 32 grain V-Max.

BobD's working with this cartridge necked down to .17 cal, not the standard 5.7.

That's the way to go, mighty fine looking case. He claims about 33-3400fps w/25gr.

He's friendly, so contact him if you'd like.

Better yet, sign on www.saubier.com and read up on it. He's got quite a few posts and a great article about it on there. plus there's others added their comments too.

Thanks, I've wandered over to Saubier in the meantime and found quite a bit of activity necking the case to both .204 and .173. I got a reamer print and offer of a sample case from an individual over there. Good group for the sub-caliber stuff.
