Michael b FreemanCustom built 6.5 / 284
I want to have a custom built 6.5 / 284 built and I want to use the savage action as I foresee barrel changes and I think it will save a few dollars at that time. I will use this rifle for mountain hunting Mule deer and long shots so it must be light and accurate. I would prefer a fluted barrel over a pencil barrel and the absolute lightest stock that will still keep the rifle accurate. Want to be able to set the high BC VLD bullets to the lands. Question is which Savage action to start with? Any suggestions on a barrel and light stock?

Slowpoke SlimI have a heavy target gun in 6.5x284 built on a Savage target action. They will sure shoot.
For a hunting rifle, I will assume you want a repeater action. Blued or stainless to your preference, but I would probably start with a long action repeater with the accutrigger. There are several barrel companies now making "drop in" barrels for the Savage. Shilen, Benchmark, McGowen, Pac-Nor, Lothar-Walther but to name a few. Any of these should be able to make your barrel to your specs.
Fred at Sharpshooter Supply can build you one up from scratch, modify your existing one, or just give you some pointers. I highly recommend his "time and true" job on a Savage action. Makes them run silky-smooth and you can work the bolt with one finger, and quietly, nice for a big game rifle.
I can't help you with which stock is the lightest for Savage, mine are target guns, and my stocks are heavy. You might also try here:

scottfromdallasNot trying to talk you out of a custom built on a Savage action but Savage actually produces several rifles in 6.5x284 (norma). They have a stainless synthetic accustock that is 6.9 lbs.

scottfromdallasHere is a link to the stainless one as well. I wouldn't worry about accuracy, all Savages seem to shoot. One wise old sage on AR always says if he was only concerned about accuracy, all his rifles would be Savages.

swampshooterI would call Shilen barrels, they're over close to Houston and ask them who in you're area could do a good job for you. They're nice people and will help.

Cary HowardMichael, I agree with the others about just buying a Savage rifle. I have had 2 chambered in 6.5x284 and they both are awsome shooters!!! The one I have now is the Model 111 Long Hunter. This is the best group that was obtained with my current rifle. While the other 2 were not as good as this one... they both shot under 3/4" at 100yds. That is a 3 shot group.
