Jimmy BarnesGood starter gun
I have a friend who is wanting to get his grand children a good starter gun for deer only and asked me about the Savage Axis. I told him I would have to ask the pros as I know nothing about the Axis. Anyone have any input?

BiebsJimmy, I'm sure the Axis is probably a great shooter, but it comes in a synthetic stock with a standard length of pull, probably 13 1/2 to 13 3/4". That might be too log for younger folks. He might want to stay with a Savage, but get one in a wood stock that can be cut, and later lengthened as the kids grow.

Tim BogleCheck out Weatherby. I believe they sell a package rifle with a scope and two stocks. A youth stock and a full size stock for when the kid gets bigger.

tiggertateThe Axis comes in a youth model too, as does the Stevens 200 Short action. Also comes in a package youth gun with a scope. I don't think Savage includes an adult stock with the initial purchase but they offer an upgrade to an sdult stock for any youth gun for about $50 or so.

carpetman1I guess which starter gun to get would depend on the type race.

You mean you would advise a different starter gun for Caucasians as opposed to Asians, for example? I have grandchildren of two different races and I was planning to start them both on the same cut-down Sako L461 with an H&R pencil barrel on it. Should I alter my plans?
