Colin Masters.240 Weatherby @ less than 100 yards...
I have aquired a .240 Weatherby Mk V and will be useing it on Whitetail this year. There is a very real chance a shot may come at less than 100 yards.
Is there anything to worry about in terms of expansion? I will be useing either 100 grain Partitions or 85 grain Barnes TSX's, factory loaded.

rodellI'd go with the monometal, that's a lot of wallop.
While shot placement trumps all, you will drop whatever you shot no matter what the bullet does!

subsailor74I would go with the Barnes X Triple shocks - that is what I use in my .240 Weatherby. The rifle shoots like a laser, and the bullet zips right through, regardless of angle, and it does not come apart.

If you R using the monometal maybe so. As a general statement for all bullets it's less than fact. Short ranges and ultra fast bullets can be bad medicine. From experience :
105 grain 6mm bullet from a 6mm X 270 IMP. Horrible !
62grain cup and core 22-250. Just terrible.
140 grain cup and core 6.5x.284 fast twist.4" entrance wound.
All were well placed shots.
If the situation was worrysome and the choice was mine , at short range, I'd probably down load the 100 grain partition to about 3000 fps. I think, however. that the partition should do just fine at 3200 fps.

ramrod340I'm not that sure I'd worry about it. The 240wby burns a lot more powder but gains over a 6mm or 243 aren't that much. 257 Roberts vs 25-06. Pretty much any non varmint bullet in the ribs will put a whitetail down. Just don't hit the shoulder if you want the meat.

505EDAn X bullet will whistle right thru...it will work fine..most deer get shot well under a 100 yards..

Two fellows I know used to regularly hunt with .22/250s and just plain ordinary non-premium cupcore 55gn,
I though they were undergunned, till I then decided to try exactly the same with my .224WBY and .22/250 and discovered how effective
it really is with careful shot placement..(typically 50- 75 yd shots.)
.240WBY with premium controlled expansion 100gr NP?...nothing at all to worry about.
