It was mildly popular back in the day, when wildcatting was a status symbol!! About as overbore as possible however and it died on the vine..

With the super-high B.C. 6mm bullets available these days, you should be able to shoot waaay the heck yonder with that rifle. Be interested to hear what powder you settle on for accuracy, velocity and barrel life!

Very cool. Last i chatted about the 244 it was with Harry Selby about Bob Ruark potting buffalo with one in Mozambique.

I've coveted one for years and have a Mauser action with a magnum bolt face that I have pondered building one on for a while. Just can't pull the trigger, no pun intended. What has held me back is the bore diameter. Isn't the original diameter .245? Do "they" happen to make a reamer for .243? If so, I might jump in. Wonder if we would have to neck turn .300 H&H brass? Keep talking, you have aroused my curiosity.

I have an origibal H&H made one.

It uses a .245 caliber bullet, have no idea why.

It will shoot .243 caliber bullets with no problems.

H&H used to ration ammo to registered owners of this cartridge.

A friend, who was one of the directors of H&H, used to visit Dubai quite often, and stayed in my house.

One time in London, he asked me if I wanted to have primed brass and bullets, for free, as they were not going to load them any more.

I had to sign a release form, which I was very happy to do so, as it basically said I cannot complain if they did not work.

I still have them.

The rifle used to belong to my grandfather.

Shoots reasonably accurate, but nothing like modern made rifles.

Velocity was never near as close as they claimed.

So, would the reamer have a .245 pilot and if so could you use it to chamber a .243 diameter barrel???

I have no idea, but would assume the current reamers would be for 243 size barrels.

I have no idea why H&H did this.

And here is a funny thing.

They have discontinued building them because a number of people - including my father - who mistakenly put the wrong size ammo in.

In my fathers case, the rifle held, but apparently a piece of metal hit him just under the eye.

I have no more details as I got was he had to send the rifle back to H&H for repair.

And they were out in the desert with no doctor or medicine, so all they did was put crushed garlic in the wound!

Have your reamer made to ride the bore of a .243 barrel and you might look at neck dimensions as well.

I would like to see a chamber print for this. I have a set of RCBS dies in this chambering, however the print I received from JGS doesn't come close the the chamber cast of the dies. My dies look more like a 6mm version of a STW. Not what I pictured when I bought the dies.

I saw one built on a 1917 enfield. No dies for sale with it, or I might have bit on it.
Ross Seyfried did an article on a 6mm/264 mag improved. In it he talked a bit about his Fathers 244, which was a little behind it in velocity.

.22 Eargesplitten Loudenboomer

This cartridge was developed in the 1960s by P.O. Ackley for Bob Hutton of Guns & Ammo magazine, and was intended solely to exceed 5,000 ft/s (1,500 m/s) muzzle velocity. Ackley's loads only managed 4,600 ft/s (1,400 m/s)(Mach 4.2), firing a 50-grain (3.2 g) bullet. Based on a .378 Weatherby Magnum case.

We have so much better powders now that I get 4,600 fps with my 22.250 AI and 36 grain bullets.

FWIW, there's an article in May 2016 (#286) Rifle Magazine by Terry Wieland on the 244 H&H Magnum that you might want to read. It's not at all flattering.

"No one at Holland and Holland is now, or ever has been, anxious to name the employee whose brainwave it was. Suffice to say, the 244 H&H was not one of that illustrious firm's triumphs in cartridge design."
