Considering a Med-Lng Range Deer Rifle...Tika/Rem 270WSM-7MM Rum?!
Ok,I usually am the Big bore Nut,but am getting into a deer lease for next year with some old buds(male bonding stuff hilbily)..They shoot up to 500 yds,but most shots are 50-300. I want a flat shooter with min holdover,so have narrowed down to 270WSM on the low side and the 7MM Rum on the other.
Dont want to spend a fortune,so Tika T3s look good(Stainless 24" 270WSM) and have a good rep,or a Rem 700 26" SS Sendero in 7Rum..I want Stainless/Synthetic and under 1" of course thumb...."What say you guys"? bewildered

Do you mean you'll finally be able to get more than 5 shells reloaded with a pound of Rel 19 ????

Since you like the Sendero, the .264 Winchester is available. That's a flat shooter and is a mild compared to the 7mm RUM.

If I'm interpreting this right, you're taking long shots, so we're not hunting in the woods and therefore not from a tree stand. I wouldn't want to stalk with a Sendero.

I vote for the Tika.

But if you insist on living within the limits you set then a Tikka in 270 WSM is quite a rifle. The Leupold VX-3 2.5-8x is about a perfect fit.

When did shooting game at 500 yards become so popular?

Good question, Scott. If you mean shooting at game at 500 yards I've seen all sorts of people with hunting licenses do it. Those who actually score clean, first round kills at 500 yards are pretty scarce.

Grab yourself a 270 in a Tika, and it will do, If you want a little more same rifle in a 7mm Remington Mag. Shoot pretty much anything you want with either one. Anything larger than these and the recoil and blast go way up. You could throw in a 25-06 into the mix, plenty flat shooting low recoil just right for Texas White Tails.

a .270 winchester with a good 130 bullet will do it all, 130Accubond comes to mind, the 270WSM is just not enough more to make it worthwhile, I have never owned a 7mmRM never saw the need for one.

a 7mmRemMag, 120gr TTSX and as much RL22 as your rifle likes lit off by a Fed215 will kill any deer on the planet if you do your part.

Contrary to the Rem7mmMag haters, who hate the 7mmMag for being popular, like the 30-06 it's very popular for a reason.

Scott, this site seems to be a good place to find members of the small fraction who expect to make first round hits at seriously long ranges on purpose.

270wsm is great. What do you mean by not spending a fortune? Personally, I'd pass over the 7 RUM. I have no personal experience, but from what I have gathered its rather fickle, as its a whole step above normal over bores. The 7mm STW would get your nearly all the performance without as much powder burned or recoil. I know thats not an issue for you lol but still just saying. Plus cases are easy to come by or make. Find a 7mm Rem Mag with a 26" barrel and long enough magazine, have it stretched out to 7 STW, voila, done deal.

my thoughts exactly!...
you really don't even need any of the "mags" for deer at 500 yds. the RUM is so overbore, i can't imagine it wouldn't be a finicky sob to work with. taking that further, you really don't any of the "mags" for deer at 500yds. a well built .280 improved will do the trick just as good and it's a well proven loader freindly, but plenty "hot-rod" enough of a round to get out there easily, with a still small enough case volume to load down to easy going pressures when you want to. yet, it can easily stand to be in a 26 inch tube and use it all... that's where you'll really see it's full potential, especially if you want to throw 160's and 175's out there. the couple hundred fps. the .280 impr'd looses to the bigger cased boomers doesn't mean squat with the mid weight bullets, it's really only gonna show up with the heavy weights, even then, the it will do a good job with well placed shots. i'd opt for a gun that's fun and comfortable to shoot and rely on being able to put the pill right where i want it without the recoil and blast.

Being as meat & potato kind o' guy, I'd find it hard to pass on a standard 270 or 30-06. I like the idea of Tikka, but a vintage Sako would be even better (Bofors steel baby!). I'd buy one of these before I plunk down $800.00 on a new model 70, or Ruger.

If I were to build something, I'd give serious consideration to the 6.5X55 Swede. Conversely, I've heard it said that the well dressed cartridge wears a belt, and if you're leaning that way it's tough to beat the 7m/m Remington magnum.
Just MHO...

Thanks guys patriot,I have gone back and fourth from one extreme(30-378) to the other(25-06)....I(so far)like the 270WSM in a 7 poundish Stainless synthetic with a good 24" barrel of #5-6 contour as I really want a consistently accurate rig (1/2" or better) for deer size game thumb...All else falls to the .600 Overkill (thats why it is called that!) BOOM clap

I go along with all the guys here, who scoff at 500yd shots on game. The only target I have ever shot at those ranges, is when I shoot across the course, and that could be 600yds. And for the most part calibre dosen't matter.

Do you plan on shooting from a stand along or down a Sendero? If so the Remington "Sendero" rifle would be fine, as well as the 270
Winchester. With a 26" bbl from my Sendero, I am getting over 3250fps with a 130 Nosler Bullet. I have been trying to get set up to shoot an Arizona White tail (Coues) deer, at 400 plus yards, but I always seem to make the shot at less than 200 yds!
Good Luck

Have you considered the 257 Wby? People seem to love their Vanguards in 257, even though it has a shorter barrel then a Mark V. That would pretty much suit your goals and still come in under budget. I think they're like 400$ on the nose for the plain model, 600-ish for the updgraded B&C stock and around 1k for the sub moa models....but I've yet to hear of any vanguard/howa that won't do around moa or better with factory, even less with handloads. That 2-300$ you save over a Tikka could go towards ammo!

Do some research on a 6.5x284. It is fast and flat and exotic enough to appeal. Mild recoil and factory brass is available.

Tom,
Stop being a big crybaby CRYBABY and go with the 30-378! Put a sissy pad on your shoulder and suck it up!

Seriously, one other to consider is a Remington 700Ti in 300 short mag. Pop's is a laser (as is mine in 260 Rem). beer

Stay well my friend and Happy New Year.

Paul

P.S. I'm getting a bunch of 750grain "lights" from RGB for my 600 OK: you know - lighter bullets for less recoil and such ... thumb

I don't have the STW, but will be doing load development on the RUM soon!

Hey Low Wall, you old poacher! Great link to the long range hunting site! Found this really detailed and interesting article. I thought many would appreciate it.

good reply...the 7mm Rem Mag is an unsung hero in my books...the "Rodney Dangerfield" of rilfe cartridges..it never gets any respect....it's a good flat shooting deer cartridge with 140's and recoils only slightly more than a 30-06....a 120 is even faster and flatter...in a good rifle it's very accurate..I sold a Sendero 7 Mag to a friend last year..he has it pushing a 150 Ballistic Tip 3150 and putting three in an inch at 200 yards quite regularly..what's not to like?

Went out today with fire formed cases and two ladders loaded to develop the 7mm RUM. Fired four shots with the starting load just to get it on paper and sight it in. After a sight adjustment, next two shots were touching and the chrono read 3150 fps with the 160 grainer. It got too windy to try to shoot the long range Audette's so I left.

I'm pretty pumped! I think it's gonna be one hell of a shooter!

I shot my Audette's ladders today with the 7mm RUM. It's my first go around with this cartridge and to say the least, I'm impressed. The T-870 proved to be THE POWDER for my rifle, sporting a clustering from 99.7 gr to 100.6 gr (4 shells in .3 gr increments) of about 1/2 MOA up at 3225 fps with the 160 gr Accubond.

The US-869 gave similar velocities at 103 grs. Recoil is quite mild with the muzzle brake even though the rifle is a light one at about 7.5 lbs.
