Just wondering - if you wanted to buy a walnut stocked, blued, sporter weight .223, what makes and models would you be considering and why?

It's hard finding a wood/blued 223. I checked quite a few local gun stores. The only thing in was the CZ527. One store even had it in Maple.

No Rem, Browning, Savage or Sako were in stock in wood. Plenty in matt black and plastic.

Does Savage make a Blued version ?. I love my Savage for the accuracy as well as my Tikka's .

My 223 Sporter barrel shoots under 1/2 MOA with some loads.

I have a Rem 700 Classic. I think some NIB's are still floating around.

I bought a CZ 527 Varminter in Wood and blue.

Remington CDL, Ruger HM77R, Savage Mod. 14 Classic, WBY Vangaurd Sporter- good looking.

I really like the looks of the Ruger Hawkeye. How do you guys find it feeds etc with the long action and short .223 cartridge? Any issues?

However, if I was looking for a 223 factory rifle, blued with a Walnut stock, I'd search for one of the Remington Model 700 Classics in 223. They are available from time to time.
And, right up there with the Rem, there are some Mini Mauser Action based rifles in 223. If the stock on the rifle I'd buy wasn't right, I'd put a better Walnut stock on it.
Truth be known, I'd own both rifles I mention.
I've got a serious love affair going with 223's exactly like the one you're looking for.
The rifle that comes close to what you want is a Rem Model 7 in 223. I have one in the CDL configuration, and it is accurate, with the good looks of the CDL stock.

Back before Remington made the 20" 223Rem S&S M7, they made an 18" B&W 223Rem M7. I nearly wore the Blue off of one looking at it each time I went in that Gun Shop.

Only 2 problems for me. First I prefer S&S. Second, the barrel was so thin, with it having a Wood stock all the weight was at the rear. It handled like a banjo. But, it sure looked nice.

As far as I can tell, the Hawkeye models in short actions have not hit the shelves yet. I will qualify my statement a bit; the LH models have not hit the shelves yet. I'm on the hunt for one as I really like the looks of them.

Tell me more about this short action Ruger Hawkeye. The only thing thats turning me off the Ruger at the moment is the action not being scaled to the little .223 round - but if they are bringing out a short action that would change everything

I'd opt for the older little Sako or a Ruger No.1

I just had to post this again. Sako, Shilen bbl gold band, 3 pos safety. (not mine)

I think SAKO is the only one with an action scaled for the 223 cartridge. All the others use a 308 length action, which drives me crazy. Lou

+ a whole lot on the Sako Vixen in 223.
They are probably at the top of the list. I had forgotten about them when I made my earlier posting.
I see them for sale from time to time on GunBroker.com, and GunsAmerica.com.

I had a beautiful little Sako Vixen chambered in .223 Remington with a 6.5x20 Leupold mounted in Sako rings. I traded it to a friend and my friend let it go without me knowing. I could just cry whenever i think about that.....
