GeedubyaTwo deuces, L461 vixen vs S491. Which would you keep?
I've been thinking of parting company with one of these two rifles.
Both are heavy barreled Sakos, chambered in 222 Rem.
Both are dead stock.
Both shoot lights out (so to speak).
The rifle at the top is a Vixen, L461 action.
The rifle on the bottom has the heavier S491 action.
My question to you guys that know a thing or two about Sakos, is which would you keep and why?
Thanks,
GWB

Phil NI love the striped, dark wood of the top one. If I just HAD to get rid of one of them and they both shot equally well.....the bottom, lighter one would have to go.
Nice problem to have!

Kevin GulletteNo contest.....keep the L461.

GhubertThe vixen, because she is a beauty and a lady to boot.
The other, though in other company perhaps, is also a keeper.
But it has to be those old Sakos. It's got good wood, shoots well and is designed around the cartridge it fires.
As others have said you'd be made to get rid of either!

WhatTheI like the photo a-top of your skins, very classy! Too bad they are in the same caliber so you could keep'em both! Both rifles are winners, but your L461 gets my nod.
Very nice

IMO the Sako L-461 is the finest action ever produced.....a Cadillac of actions so to speak...
This has to be the "keeper"

Why isn't this thread called two, three deuces?

Kevin GulletteYep.....the ol' L461 is tough to beat.

HamishGidday Geedubya,
All those Sakos are pining to come to the natural home of Sako rifles, the South Island of New Zealand.
You are welcome to visit them anytime but in the interest of rifle welfare and to ease the trauma of their seperation from their natural environment I beg you to release them to my tender care for repatriation.
Happy Hunting

Seems like a terminal case of Sako-itus. Got a mild case myself( Sako 75 - 222 and 6.5x55). Wouldn't be getting rid of any of them, you know that you'll regret it. I sold a Sako Finnfire 22LR to a mate and have been trying to buy it back since, even bidding more than I paid for it new - no joy so far

BushchookThe L461 is much preferred due to its lighter weight and more compact dimensions. L461 is forged vs S491 cast. Better recoil lug setup on the 461 . Better wood on your 461 too . Easy choice I reckon.
491 would actually be my last choice of models in a Sako .222 . I have an A1 in .222 , a 461 in .17 , a 579 Swift and a 75 deluxe .270WSM in my safe ATM .
Nice rifle with the pig BTW. What calibre ?
The hunting imperative was part of every man's soul; some denied or suppressed it, others diverted it into less blatantly violent avenues of expression, wielding clubs on the golf course or racquets on the court, substituting a little white ball for the prey of flesh and blood.

Kevin GulletteVery nice rifles, GWB!!!
Most of mine are L461 or AI actioned.
A couple of years ago I put together a new PD rifle in 17-222.
Kevin
It started out with this action, that I had hidden away for many years.
And ended up like this....
PD's hate it.......too bad....

Ian (VA)I'd vote for the L461 as well. I put a 6x45 together on one last year and ended up with a neat rifle mostly due to such a neat and well made action.

GeedubyaLookin' mighty fine guys.
Thanks for posting.

Paolo9,5x73I would keep both of them unless you need to move one. Since it's a varmint rig I would keep the more accurate rifle. I suspect it will be hard to move .222 varmint rifle with wood stock. Most guys now would pick .223 with synthetic stock.

GeedubyaHard to say which is most accurate. They are both fairly accurate (sub MOA). Blue steel and wood continues to turn my crank. Dunno 'bout ya'll.

Gidday Geedubya,
Seriously, you need to set those rifles free and let them wander through nirvana, ie the South Island of New Zealand.

Send them down here for a stay first then they can be sent on to Oz...in a couple of years.

HamishGidday Perry,
DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT send them to OZ. It is a land of rowdy buffoons, send it to New Zealand a land of refined gentlemen. Calling NZ Oz is akin to calling the US Mexico. Neighbours but quite different.

MikelravyI dunno but I might be interested in buying whatever one you want to sell.
02 August 2010, 07:27
remboit's no contest...keep the L461,..it's scaled to the small cartridges based on the .378" case head....the S491 has a much larger bolt diameter and larger exterior dimensions as it's merely a short version of an action that can handle the '06 cases...the way most rifle builders do a short action,...Sako did it the right way...I've owned at least 20 Sakos of various action sizes and chamberings,...sold my last AV yesterday..all I have left is an AI in .17 Remmy,...love that little action....
