.250 Savage rotary magazine
Acquired an old .250 Savage and the rotary magazine spring is not strong enough or needs to be tightened. Any advice will be appreciated.

Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! Some never pay and some pay and never reap the reward. Wisdom comes with age! Sometimes age comes alone..

IIRC, there is a "sticky" in the Savage Collectors' forum on 24-Hour Campfire that tells you, or maybe shows you, how to tighten the rotor spring. It isn't hard to do, except on the 284s, then it is nearly impossible without an extra set of hands.

Take off the forend and using a split screw driver insert it into the two screw driver slots in the rotary magazine..hold it and take out the small screw under the front ring and take a turn on it then reinsert the screw and it will be tight...

First check your displayed number in the round counter on the left side under the above mentioned screw and be sure its turned to # 0, if so its properly set unless the spring is weakened over time, in which case you need to turn it one turn as above and it will show #1..Sometimes 1.5 turns is needed.

It helps to have 3 hands unless you have done this beforef or if I have been successful in totally confusing you..You may be better off to send the rifle to Dennis Olson in Plains, Mt. he can fix any Savage 99 while others are trying to figure out whats wrong with it and he won't break the bank doing it....

Sometimes you also have to stretch the spring a little to give it enough tension.

That sping is available from several sources, Id replace it before I'd mess with it..They just don't cost that much btw...
