7mm08 for long rage?

oldun7mm08 for long rage?
Hi guys, What is the maximum range you would use a 7mm-08 for taking deer?
06 September 2010, 07:17
6.5BRIf you can hit, it will kill out to and beyond 600 yds. I usually refrain after 400.

bobgrowWith 140 gr bullets, it will be the shooter not the chambering.

If you're young and steady about 300 yds. The adequate killing range of the 7-08 is greater.

mad_jack02I took two white tail deer at just over 450 yards four years ago using 140 grain bullets. They both dropped right where they stood, and they didn't act like it mattered that I was fire forming factory ammo in my 7-08 improved chamber.

wasbeemanI think the proper question would be at what range can a shooter make a humane and deadly shot. I daresay the shooter will run out of ability before the 7-08 runs out of steam.

For anyone who can shoot over tree hundred yards and kill deer cleanly ""every time"" there are at least 10 that can't but still try.

I know! Having lived in GJ, CO., for many years and hunted with those Ranch people (cowboys).
Comeing down out of the mountains,we were riding accross this saddle and one of the guys spoted a buck in a small stand of quackies A good distance ( Estimated 300yds. + ) down hill. 7 or 8 guys dismounted and started blazing away. After about 30 seconds, a fair amount of downed limbs and a number of empty guns the buck figured he had enough of this noise, got up and slowly walked out of sight.

Of course non of us would ever participate in something like that . Right ?

hey, if you can put the bullet there at that distance.. with the proper bullet the 7/08 is up to the task...
it is the shooters job to pick the right bullet and for him to put the bullet where it needs to go...
the round is up to it if you are...

That's impressive, goodonya mate. What ammo did you use?

graybirdMy personal limit is 350 yards, with 200-250 being more ideal. Any thing longer, I would hope I could get closer.

Wed. the .270 was doing exceptionally good from a steady rest. With a 4 power scope it was hitting a 1/2 size pig metal target evry time at 300 yds. There was a mild wind and the scope had rather heavy cross hairs.I was hitting that pig in the ass in the snot in the gut in the leg:
; you name it. I guess the point is that anyone that can place their shot at 400 plus yards where they intend every time is a far better shot than I.

1894mk2Expansion is noticably reduced at 275yards with 140gr prohunters from my 7-08.

wasbeemanConsidering that the 7-08 was developed by the silhouette shooters, and it takes a pretty hefty knock to tip over the ram at 550 yards, I would think that it'd do for a deer at least at that range.
Perhaps a different bullet or weight should be considered. I've never shot anything (except varmints and 1 antelope) beyond 300 yards. My son shot a mulie at 284 long steps with a M7 (with the 18.5" barrel) shooting 140gr NPs. 1 shot, and the deer did that sideways run for about 20 feet and tumped over.

LJSWe used 7MM/08 rifles for metallic silhouettes out to 500 meters. You can actually watch the bullet in flight if the light is right with a good spotting scope. They are really dropping and it would be very easy to shoot under if you were 25 yards off. That distance requires very precise equipment in my opinion. I never see it mentioned by "long range shooters" but when silhouette shooting we had to tweak our scope settings daily. Your settings could change several inches day to day.

Dr. LouI have used a Kimber 84 in 7-08 and 140 NBTs for antelope out to 400 yds with great success.

Lloyd SmaleI shoot alot of deer doing crop damage and although the standard rounds like the 06 270 280 08 and 708 are probably capable of over 300 yard kills i limit my shooting with them to that range. If i am hunting where shots will run out to 400 and more i usually take a 257 wby 7mag or 300 mag. A couple inches in trajectory and wind bucking doesnt sound like much but from my personal experiece every bit helps at those ranges.

HamishGidday oldun,
If you are going to try a Greg Duley you need one of those super dooper rifles with the four grand scopes that he uses. I suppose it depends on how far you can shoot.
I know the 7-08 cartridge in a T3 or Sako will be able to reach out as far as I can shoot with confidence (300m).
Happy Hunting

Bob in TXMy 7mm-08 is my go to hunting rifle here in Texas. To answer your question, I personally would take a shot on a deer out to 300 yards with it, however I have not had to take a shot over 185 yards on a deer so far. It will certainly take deer well past 300 yards. I don't look at my '08 as my "long range rifle".
I use the 140's.

Hmmm, I guess all those deer I have taken at twice that distance with mine were just a dream. . . .
