Varget in 6mm Rem?
Everyone seems to brag on Varget, so I bought some to try out. 36.0 gr in R-P brass, RWS LR primer with a 100 gr Rem PSP shot a horrible group (2 1/4" at 100 yards). The same components with 43.5 gr of old DuPont IMR 4831 shot .62" out of the same Mod 600.

Has anyone had any decent accuracy with Varget in the 6mm?

I guess I have to answer yes and no.

While Varget works quite well for me a some other calibers, I have had limited success with it in the 6mm Remington.

I did shoot some really good groups with it when testing the 55 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips. However, Varget did not provide very good groups with the more common 70 to 100 grain bullet weights.

When using bullets of 70 or more grains in the 6mm Remington I have had the best luck in recent years using either IMR 4831 or H 4350.

Hope this helps, R F

Any success I had with it in my 6mm Rem was at max velocity. I am not as impressed with Varget as others are.

IMR 4064 and IMR 4895 and IMR 3031 seem to work well in mine. When I am feeling, like doing something different, I do the RL 7, or IMR 4198 route out of the Lyman 47th Edition Manual, with good results.

I still think Varget is H 4895 with some extra chemical additive and that is it. ( If that much difference).

Cheers and Good shooting

Like RF, I had great luck with very light bullets - 58gr V-Max's that I moly coated. Shot little bugholes at lightspeed! Didn't try it in other 6mm applications.

Actually, I just started fooling with Varget in my 6mm as a result of talking with another member (GHD). Worked up to 42grns w/75grn MEF boatail. very accurate in my old varmint special.

I've had some luck with 4831 and Rel 19 w/87grn vmax

I thought that might be the case, so I bought some RL 22 today. I suppose MRP/RL 22 is the closest to N205 that one can find today.

I hadn't loaded any 4831 since the late '60's, until just the other day. DuPont IMR 4831 gave me a .62" group at 100 yards, while IMR IMR 4831 gave me a 1.62" group with all the other comonents the same. I think I'll load some WWII surplus H4831 and see what it does, along with some RL 22 loads.

39.0 grains of Varget over a Federal 210 Match primer and under the 87 grain VMax works pretty drn good in my VLS! 3300fps average(over about 8 test sessions with varying temps and barometric pressures)and follows the balistic charts pretty darn close out to 7-800 yards...after that it's go to the 105 AMAX's ahead of 50.5 grains of H1000. Varget has worked awfully well for me in a host of chamberings! If any of you shoot a .243 Winchester, try 41.0 grains of VARGET behind the 70 grain NOSLER BT....bet it will shoot! 50.5 grains of Reloader 19 works well in the 6mm with the 70 grain NOSLER also! Good luck with the testing! GHD
