akplsMdl. 70 Version - .257 Roberts?
Yesterday I picked up a Mdl 70 at a show that I can't quite pin down the specific model on. The details:
Post 64 push feed action
20" barrel
No iron sights
Caliber: .257 Roberts
Injection molded synthetic stock with Winchester recoil pad
Matte black metal finish
Hinged floor plate
Serial # G2084XXX
It appears to be close to one of the Post 64 "lightweight" or "compact" versions, but I can't find anything in any of the books I have that shows those versions in that specific caliber. It looks to have never been fired and came with a Leupold 6X M8 Compact (definitely not new though) scope mounted on it. It's a nice light compact setup that should work well for one of my kids.
Anyone have any ideas on the specific model this might be?

willmckeei had one exactly like this abt 10 yrs ago. likewise, i never quite figured out precisely which variation it was supposed to be as it didn't exactly match any, at least the ones in gun digest. winchester was cranking out a bewildering variation of m70's back then (like remington 700's since that time) and my suspicions were it was left over parts cobbled together into a "variation" to clean out their bins. i bought it because i was in between 257's and it was a decent enough rifle but i didn't care for the short barrel. my serial # was G20785XX.

SnellstromAnything stamped on the barrel? Like "Lightweight" or "Compact"?
What is the muzzle diameter?
Sounds very similar to a .243 I bought for "my future ex-wife to be". Except hers had a wood stock. Hers was a Win M70 Lightweight Carbine. Very nice little gun and very accurate as well.

seafire/B17GSounds like a synthetic stock throw on afterwards, when you could buy an action and barrel from Winchester....without a stock...

BigNateI have a pretty new Win CRPF in .25-06 that I won at a RMEF(or should I say RMWolfF) banquet that is not a match to any model I could find. It has a matte black finish on the metal, Realtree camo synthetic stock, but a 24" barrel. It is supposed to be a SS barrel but I can't tell. Mine is a pretty good shooter. It makes for a good knock-around too because it won't be a collectible. Nate

260remguyI believe that the rifle you have described was a non-cataloged limited run made sometime between 1985 and 1995. I thought of them as being something along the lines of the Lightweight Carbines that Winchester/USRA cataloged in the middle to late 1980s, with the exception of being matte finished and having a synthetic stock, rather than being polished blue and having a walnut stock.
