6.5 X 284 OAL
I am putting togeather a 6.5 X 284 and am starting with a short action that has a 2.95" magazine. Are their heavy bullets (150 to 160 gr) that I will not be able to shoot without using up case capacity? Thank you for the help

What are you going to use it for ?

I dont think you will loose out much, if anything at all. With some experimentation with powders you wont have any significant loss of performance at all. Dont forget that you can compress your charges if you have too.

I built a 284 win on a short action and dont regret it at all. Going to a long action would not have made any significant difference performance wise for me as I can still shoot the long heavy 7mm bullets at very good velocity indeed.

I think the theory of needing a long action for these cartridges to perform is one of the biggest cyber myths around and totally negates the origional design concept for these cartridges in the first place.

Hey R P

What bullets at 150 to 160 grain are you planning on shooting with the 6.5x284? The only 6.5 bullet I am aware of above 140 gr is one Hornady 160 gr bullet and it is a round nose flat base. Not exactly 6.5x284 fodder.

I am having a 6.5 Rem Mag made on a long action and the bullet I sent to the gunsmith for land location was a 130 gr Accubond seated to the middle of the shoulder area and it is approx 3.112" long.

Even with most 140 gr bullets you are going to be into the powder column. If you have a choice then it would be best to plan on using a good 125 or 130 gr bullet with the 6.5x284, throated and twisted appropriately. JMHO

Thank you both... Good Thoughts... I am going to stick with the 130's and 140's
