Roberts velocity corection.
Earlier I posted a load for my 20 inch Roberts, with a 100 grain partition over 44.5 grains of IMR-4350 as having a 3100 FPS velocity. I fired the load again today and I only got 2928.
I Don't know where I made my mistake. The load is acurate as hell and I am taking it after mule deer next week. After deer season is over i will bump it up a little and see if I can get 3000.
I will also try the 44.5 grains IMR-4350 with the 110 grain acubond.

I wouldn't miss any sleep over and accurate 100 grain partition going 2928 fps! I think that will do the job nicely.
I just worked the bugs out of my new 257 and it is shooting 117 gr Sierra's over IMR-4350 into smaller and smaller groups every time I shoot it, I couldn't be happier and I haven't a clue what the speed is.
Post an autopsy picture after your hunt.

TJ,

Thanks for the update.
My load for the 100 grain Partitions in the Roberts is 45.0 grains of H-4350.
No chrono info on mine.

5 yrats ago the chrono was my god but I don't think it's been out of the corner for several years.. The paper target is my new god. I use 43.0 gr of h4350 with a 115 partation & think it goes about 2,800 fps with a 24" Lilja barrel.

I wouldn't mes with your load. I shoot 2900fps with my TSXs and have only recovered 1 bullet in over 20 animals. The difference between 2900 and 3000 is negligable.
Good luck on the mulie hunt!

That must be the problem with my new 257 Roberts. My book (Nosler's 5th edition) shows max load for IMR 4350 as 43.5 with a 100gr bullet and 40.0 with a 115gr bullet. I'm shooting 38grs of IMR4350 behind a 110gr AccuBond. The 3 shot accuracy out of the 22" Lilja 3 groove barrel is .280. Have no idea what the velocity is as I don't have a chrono.

You will find that if you check the velocity enough times that due to weather conditions, lighting, and just some unexplainable things beyond your control that the averages will vary.
Your load will kill any mule deer you shoot- good luck on your hunt.

The nosler loads are safe for a mauser 95, a good source for 257 loads is the feb. 2003 Handloader magazine. Alliant has full power 257 loads on their web site. I am not a hot roder but 45+gr loads of either 4350 are perfectly safe with a 120 bullet if you are using a m70 or m700 action. my newest 257 is a m700 action in a Brown pounder with a #2 3 grove 24" Lilja bbl smithed by John Lewis.. It is also a sub .25" 3 shotter with rl 22 but just a .5" with h4350.

Personal preferance I just never exceed a manual max. Have never had the need for more velocity for any reason.
