Robert_in_mtThe trick is to shoot them through the liver and miss pounch. Then you kind of herd them back towards truck, before you shoot them in head, idealy they end up behind truck facing away from truck, so they are easiest to load. DUH!!

I shot an antelope buck in Wyoming one year and misjudged how far the drift was in the 40 mph "breeze". The liver shot is 100% fatal but I don't recommend it.

Robert_in_mtI thought the sarcasm was apparent. It was meant as a joke I assumed that was intent of this thread, sorry.

nordrsetaSaw a whitetail buck hit with an 80 gr 243 varmint bullet just behind the shoulder. Did a number on the boiler room as one might imagine, but also ruptured the liver - as in three or four long deep fissures through the larger lobes - even though the bullet never penetrated the diaphragm. It cleaned up like a chest shot though. As for deliberate gutshots I thought I was ready to take the Portuguese Heartshot from time to time over the years, but never pressed the trigger...

You thought right, I think. But get ready for 8 pages of ignorant indignation...

MikeyBI just couldn't bring myself to making a gut shot. It just doesn't seem to be an effective way to kill a game animal. It may be fatal, but certainly not instantly, and certainly not as effective as spine or heart/lungs shots.

303GuyI have had one or two bad experiences with gut shots. The first was a bad mistake on my part - the animal moved forward a step without me noticing (no excuse - just understanding what went wrong) - the second was a deliberate shot from the rear to stop a heart shot feral goat from getting away. The bullet entered just inside of the back leg bone and went who knows how far in but gut matter was coming out the rib wounds. It worked and a third shot in the chest kept it down. That first gut shot haunted me for years! I did find and kill the animal with a heart shot (followed by a head shot).
