CCI HMR Reports?
Saw it on the shelf last weekend anybody shot any yet if so how does it compare to the Hornady load?

Haven't seen it yet, but unless I'm wrong it IS the Hornady load and the Remington load and anybody else's load since only CCI loads .17HMR ammo.

Is this new ammo a different bullet than the last?

I'm more'n happy with the Hornady load, personally but then, I'm easily amused.

As Fats said, the CCI brand is using a 17 grain Speer TNT. Also, Remington will use the Hornady 17 grain V-Max bullet with a gold tip.

To date, I believe all the HMR ammo is being loaded by CCI. The biggest problem has been Hornady's ability to keep up with demand on the bullets. Hopefully, Speer's entry into the market will help the supply situation.

Any ideas on the cost?

I just picked up a box of the CCI today in VA and will R&D tomorrow if not raining for a comparison between the Hornady and this. It's an impressive looking little pill! Got home in time to shoot 2 rounds at small rocks @ 100 yards and the POI was evidently the same (or close) to the Hornady! Will do my best to test this out and maybe bust a groundhog with one! Will report tomorrow night! GHD

I posted the same question in the rimfire forum and a shooter there reported that in his rifle it would not shoot with the Hornady offering.

Windy and rainy today so did not have the most oppurtune time for R&D but did compare a little. The Hornady ammo stuck 3/5 into less than 2/10s and then the wind played havoc with the other 2 and the extreme spread was 1.4 inches @ 100. The CCI was not close as it came in about 2.2 inches with no consistency except for 2 real close. That was only one test and if you want to see the target, go to www.gunbroker.com Ask the Experts forum and look up 17 ammo thread. Will do more testing on Saturday and maybe even a live varmint test! GHD

I SHOT SOME OUT OF A VOLQUARTZEN SAT. IT PROBABLY SHOT AN 1 1/2 GROUP AT A 100 YDS BUT I DON'T THINK IT WAS THE AMMO CAUSE THE RIFLE DOES NOT IMPRESS ME WITH THE V-MAX ROUND EITHER

Didn't get to test today but did pick up a box of the Remington 17 so I can do a three way test if weather cooperates tomorrow! Remington was 10.49 at a shop in NC. GHD

I shoot a CZ Varmint with a 6X20 Weaver Grand Slam. I've shot mostly Hornady's. Last time we had good conditions at the range this rifle shot 9, 5 shot group's that averaged just under 3/4 inch. The CCI's shoot as good for accuracy ( slightly left of the Hornady's )but on gopher's it's another story. I've only shot 10 or 11 gophers with the CCI's compared to 60 or 70 with the Hornady's so it isn't much of a test---but so far most shot with the CCI's needed a follow up shot where the same shot with the Hornady's really popped em! Has anyone else experienced this? We've been weather challanged so I'm looking forward to further testing when the weather break's.---Shoot Safe---montdoug

Still trying to get to shoot all three varieties at the same test! Seems like work and weather are teaming up to not allow this test to happen! Did test some of the big dogs, 243,25-06, 220AI but the wind was too much for a fair test of the little guys! Maybe tomorrow.... GHD

If anyone notices a difference in the amount of powder fouling, I'd sure like to hear about it. My Savage is good for about 50 rounds, give or take, before I start getting shots off call. A quick scrubbing remedies matters, but it's all carbon built up in the throat.

TIA

100+ more gophers last weekend!

redial--interesting about the carbon,I havn't noticed that on my rifle. I've mostly shot Hornadys, what are you shooting? By the way I used to live out of Clinton on the Clark Fork lots of gophers, spring comes a little earlierover that way also.(maybe Clinton changed the name of the town, not a very popular name in Mont.)---Shoot Safe---montdoug

I'm shooting Hornadys exclusively over here in MT's Appalachia - the Bitterroot. It tends to be wetter "up" the valley so we see 'em earlier.

Funny thing about the fouling - it's all carbon and almost entirely in the first 4-6" of barrel. No copper at all. I pull a dry brush thru once or twice, followed by wet patches. Trying to push a patch through initially is going to kink that skeeeeny rod sooner or later.

I'll be out again in about an hour!

Cheers

I let a buddy run 50 rounds of the Rem ammo through mine last evening while I backed him up with an 870 goose gun [Big Grin]

They seem to shoot exactly the same as the Hornadys in our informal test. Hmm. Wonder why ...

BTW, jump shooting scurrying gophers with a birdgun is a hoot!
