6mm Dasher or 6-6.5x47 Lapua ackley
I have posted before and I am down to 02 choices

At the moment, I have a 6mm bolt rifle slot without restriction approved by the police in England.

I plan to use it for foxing and shooting 300, 600 and longer if the chance arises.

I have had 6mmBR and 6 x 47 previously and would like something more special.

As a result I have a bunch of 6mmBR norma case and a bunch of 6.5 x 47 cases handy.

I have taken delivery of a Multishot BAT with 308 bolt face with a 1 in 8 twist lilja striaght barrel .92 inch profile

Thanks to previous advice I am considering either 6 Dasher or 6 x 47 lapua ackley

I know a dasher is proven with more load data about but the 6 x 47 lapua will feed much better.

My question to all you is

Are there any other caliber in 6mm (that fits a 308 bolt face) that I should consider ?

I have no issues with relaoding, neck turning and necking up or down.

Thanks in advance

There are several that fit the boltface.
What length action is your BAT (6.56,7.43,7.565 ?)
I assume it is a medium length, though the do offer the bolt face in the longer versions.

Of the two choices you listed--I'd go with the X47.

Any experience on 6mm Remington AI ?

The 6MM Remington AI is an outstanding high velocity 6MM. It is just under that point of diminishing return where additional case capacity yields minimal return (as in the 6MM-06). But to utilize its capacity with VLD bullets will require deep-seating in your action with the attendant accuracy and velocity reductions. The 6MM-284, while overbore to the same extent as the 6-06, may work better in your action.

"Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

Ok so we are now considering in order of preference

6mm Remington AI
6mm - 284
6mm Dasher
6-6.5 x 47 Lapua Ackley

Anymore suggestions and reasoning behind it?

You are aware of this website? : www.6mmbr.com

Just wondering why you want something more special? Is it the speed, or do you just like working on brass and spending more on barrels?

A 75 V-max at 3800 fps contra 3300fps is tempting, but barrel life is going down the toilett.

Any of the ones you are thinking about, 6x47 Lapua would be my choice. Simple or quality brass.

OR.. 6x55(AI), very few has this caliber, and quality Lapua 6.5x55 brass.

That action should accomodate '06 and long seated 284 based cartridges well.

Opens your field of choices a bmany in the overbore category.

The 1 in 8 allows for 107's maybe not 115's( some will disagree)

600 and longer the heavies do come into their own.

The X 47 can still do this though more case capacity might be in order.

But increase the "overbore" decrease the barrel life.

the 6/'06 AI and the 6/ 284 might have a tad more velocity but--

I think ,personally my choices are:
1.) 6 x 47
2.) 6 mm AI
3.) 6-284
4.) 6-'06 AI
5.) 6 Dasher

Thank you for your advice.

Can I be very frank when I had a 6BR a few years ago, I was just getting into reloading. I was not even 50% as metiulous as I am now. Neck turning sorting cases , experimenting with seating depths so on and so forth,

It seems like for UK shooting distance it is really quite difficult to beat an EFFICIENT cartridge like BR such accuracy for such little powder.

OK

Last question

Is a 6 dasher is no more or less accurate than a 6BR. It just has slightly more powder capacity and can give up to 100 fps more than a standard BR ?

If so I am going back to a BR with 1 in 8 since my last BR was a second hand job with a 1 in 12

thanks

I have seen exceptionally accurate rifles in all th calibres discussed.

The current world record 1000yd small group in a 6mm is held by a 6 X47 I believe.

I think ultimately ,it comes down to want you want and then difficulty in working with the fabrication of the rounds ,as you mentioned.

I have recently gone to the 6.5 Creedmoor (out of laziness my friends say).

But as you have mentioned the tedious bench rest processes of case prep have worn old since I no longer compete.

So be it, I'm shooting more and spending less time at the reloading bench.

Build the rifle to "warm Your Heart" not some one else (as long as you can get case stock easily)

How about the 243 Winchester?

I think it's best to analyse your shooting style and mindset.

If you like to shoot a lot and worry about barrel life etc then it's best to stick to nothing more than 6x47.

If you want to wring the last ounce of performance out of your action then the bigger 6mms are to be considered. If however you are going to worry about barrel life as you play with it then that's self defeating.

I have read (a website such as 6mm heavy?) that some of the VLDs do not like velocity much over 3,100fps. After that accuracy was said to suffer. The owner of the 6mmAI came to the conclusion that he would have been better off with a slower twist 6mmAI for standard bullets and going no more than 243 for VLDs.

Have you considered Norma's 6XC? Near 243 performance with sharper shoulder etc etc.
