.25/06 In Ruger No. 1?

Mule Skinner.25/06 In Ruger No. 1?
I am in the market for a .25/06 and am considering the Ruger No. 1 in stainless.

I will be using it for shooting paper and the occasional Texas White Tail. Does anyone have familarity with this gun/round combination? Can you provide feedback on likes, dislikes, etc.? I would also like to know what scope you are using for this combination? Thanks and Good Shooting!

GeorgeSI have a 1-V .25-06 that shoots 87gr, 100gr, and 115gr. bullets extremely well. It's stock except for a professional trigger job.
I used the gun on axis deer in the Hill Country and the 100gr. BTs just flattened them.
Good gun, great cartridge. Unfortunately, you're never sure whether a Number 1 will shoot...

Mule SkinnerThanks George. I am hearing the same thing over in the Varmint Hunting Forum. Common thread regarding the accuracy hit or miss of #1's. I just think their great looking guns. Maybe I'll have to reconsider that Bolt Action .257 RUM!

The .25-06 is a great caliber, have been shooting one since 1961 and you really don't need much more fire power if you can shoot or hunt. Good Luck anyone with a magnum can shoot at game, but the secret of hunting is hitting what you shot at!
My #1B 25-06 has probably killed more animals than all the others combined. It just works very well. I use 120 gr. Hornady hp's because they are the only bullets my rifle really likes. I sometimes wonder why I keep fooling around with other rifles when the 25-06 works as well as it does.

Here's another ditto on the 25-06, mine is a 22" bbl. ultra light that dotes on the 85 & 100 gr. b tips. It's under an inch most of the time, sometimes way under.
The #1 is another story. I've owned 3, one (a 1B in .243) was rthe most accurate non .22 cal centerfire I've ever owned. However, the other two (1B .270, 1S 7X57) were not winners in the accuracy dept. I love #1's but.......I dunno if I'll buy another one anytime soon.
Stay with the bolt guns everybody was suggesting on the other thread.

Ditto on what George said! My No 1 25-06 shoots 1.2" groups at 200 yds with the 117 gr Hornady BT at 3200 fps with boring regularity! I love it!

Ruger #1V 25-06... It's a damn fine rifle. Out of the box, mine shoots sub MOA with handloads. It balances perfectly in the hand with a reasonable scope, and is a compact treat to carry afield. The 100gr Ballistic tips just plain klobber mulies, whitetail, and antelope. With a little getting used to, you'll be as comfortable and proficient as with any turnbolt.

Mule SkinnerOK, call me crazy but I ended up buying a Remington Sendero in .25-06 instead of the Ruger No. 1. After breaking it in, it is shooting ~.5 groups with good factory ammo at 100 yards. Not bad. I am hoping to see some improvement with handloads and maybe some trigger tuning. I am thinking about buying the Ruger No.1 in .35 Whelan or some other classic cartridge. I was thinking .257 Roberts, but I just bought a quarter bore.Any recommendations? I am gonna get that No. 1, one day!

<Don Martin29>My suggestion on the Ruger #1 selection is to pick a 22" bbl if the rifle is to be carried as a game rifle. I feel that the 26" bbl #1's are a little clumsy and I have one (1S) in .300 Win Mag.
For a varmint rifle of course a 26" bbl is nice but put a scope on one and it's a big heavy rifle. As long as you know this up front it's not a problem. I know that the 25/06 fans what to use it on both game and varmints so it will be a heavy gun.
In fact even the 1A's are heavier than needed and I wish there were a featherweight version (and not the #3 please). Also the lock time could be improved.

<shall>My 1B is a great whitetail killer and I love to shoot it. Using a Leupold VXIII. I did work on the trigger a little to lighten it up. Aftermarket adjustble triggers (under $50) are available too. Just got it this past year and four whitetail did not take a step after being hit. I am using Sierra 100gr.
