I believe the Marine Corp will be capable of giving him the training he needs without your help. In fact, you will hear trainers often say it's much easier to train a boot from a cold start than having to untrain him first.
But you had a nice thought. Big Grin

Not to butt in !. I do agree with Stillbeeman .

I grew up with fire arms had club training certificates hunter safety you name it !.

When I so graciously volunteered for military service in lovely south east Asia !. I was drafted !!.

I'll never forget what or DI told the lot of us about being hot shits on the firing range !.

If you were shooting at shit the vast majority of you blank blanks wouldn't even get a whiff !.

Boys theres one slight over sight all of you mental midgets have forgotten !. The game don't shoot back !!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Let the Military train him it's what they do best !!!!!!!!!!!... salute salute

Damn good thing Sgt. Alvin York was in the Army! They did not mind his previous experience.

If the young man is going into the Marines, He will get the best marksmanship training there is! As an ex-Navy marksmanship instructor, I preferred to get students with little or no training (except for the experts who really needed no training). Other students would often have too many bad habits (preconceived notions) that are difficult to impossible to correct. This young man will do just fine!!!

Gentlemen (and Marines Smiler),
Thank you for the advice. I don't intend to teach the young man marksmanship, just responding to his request to at least handle and fire a rifle before shipping out. No intention (or qualifications) here to compete with the Marine DI's.

BTW, someone on AR has graciously offered a rifle free of charge, so my request is hereby withdrawn.

Not sure how different the services are, but I was in the Army (Infantry) and did my Basic/AIT at Ft. Benning (1988). Day 1 on the rifle range, I was plucked and sent to KP duty after the first round of live fire after sighting in. That really sucked, but I was sent to relieve the kids that needed that training. My point is that my previous training/shooting/hunting experience was definitely of benefit to me (other than getting me extra KP duty). I think the only thing I really learned about rifle shooting there was how to breath.
