257 Roberts Powders

Hi folks,

Hope this finds you well.

Any recommendations on powders for 100 gr bullets in the 257 Roberts?

Vihtavouri N140, N150?

Anyone tried Norma MRP?

N-150 and MRP should do just fine.
MRP is right there with our 4831, and the X57 family works just fine with that burn speed on up to just about the fastest rifle powders available.

In my .257, I started with IMR 4350, working up 1/2 grain at a time until I got 3 shot groups <1" from a Douglas Featherweight in a Mauser action). I chromed that load right at 2900 fps. I stopped there-no need to push harder. 3" high at 100 yd puts me on at 250 yd.

I also tried H414 WW760) and found it to work well, with perhaps a bit more velocity, but marginally less accurate than IMR 4350.

I got a bit less accuracy with IMR 4831, as well

H414 is the best powder in any X57, but you have to pass the book max load, and that's easy to do, why that is Im not sure...but it is in many cases with that powder..also that has been where the accuracy is at in every one of my rifles..CFE-223 is another..

IMR 4350 has always been my go-to powder in almost every rifle loads. not that I don't use other powders, just I have found it very versatile + have always had good performance.

For many years I used nothing but the original surplus 4831 in my .257 Roberts. Alliant RL22 and Norma MRP (same powder, different package), are very close to the old 4831 and should perform well. So should IMR7828SSC, which I find needs about 2-3% more powder by weight to match pressures and velocity of the old 4831. If Vihta Vuori powders are available to you then I would suggest N160.

H4350 for me...47.0 gr. And a 100gr. Pill...or 43 gr. And a 117 gr. Pill.

Honestly, I stopped bothering to work up loads at that point. 1/2-3/4” accuracy at 100 in a Remington M7.

It is a very versatile powder as I have said before. I would go so far as to say (as the old adage goes) if you could only have one; I would choose IMR 4350 for rifle + 2400 for pistol.

Had a Kimber Montana in 257 Roberts, worked up an accurate load with Hybrid 100V powder, velocity was 3250 fps with a 100gr TTSX, shared the load with a Bud, it's also bughole accurate in his rifle, any that wish to try, you can start at 43 grains and workup with a chronograph, Hodgdon Hybrid 100V had/has no peers for speed and accuracy for us.

My problem is that 4350, 4831 and some others is like measureing logs..sticky, inaccurate, and one should or must weigh charges.

The problem is solved with H414, WW-760 and RL-19 and 22, and some others, all of which don,t even require a scale if you know how to operated a powder measure, that's with consistency being the secret and you will get 100% accuracy in weight....I have not weighed a charge in years!!

I know others that use my approach..but you must use certain powders to do that, and full or near full cases that you can eyeball, but that's an unnecessary step for me.....

I've had excellent results with IMR 4451. 5 different rifles shooting 87gr-120gr bullets of all makes and variances, all 1/2"-1" accuracy. I've shot them in 20 degree weather to 100 degree weather, no deviation.

Thanks for all the above folks,

Would someone be kind enough to run quickload for me using a 24" barrel and 257 Roberts + P pressure? (I accept liability if I use the data generated, I will also start considerably lower than max in working up a load)

100gr Speer HotCor if you need a specific bullet but anything at 100gr should be OK (No compressed loads if you don't mind).

I load for several .257 Roberts.
Some like heavier bullets like the Sierra 117 SPBT or the 110 Accubond. These I use IMR 4350 for best accuracy.
For the rifles that like lighter bullets, 100 grain Sierra's I use IMR4064 and Reloader 15 for the most accurate loads.

Howdy folks haven't been here for a while but "257 powders" got my attention I am struggling with a 257 rob AI in a 15" encore wanting to shoot 85gr-100gr what powders would burn more efficiently in a 15" barrel. Dont mean to hijack the post.

My go to powder with 115gr Partitions Are MRP,
RL23, RL26, RL17, and RL17. All will get 3100
FPS. RL26 gets the speed with the least
pressure, and MRP was more accurate, the other
were right behind RL26.

This is IMR’s “Green” version of 4350 rumored to have been created to comply with European regulations, plus it has a decoppering agent. I like it. Very similar, but not identical to 4350 burn rate.

Historically the IMR and H 4350 and the 4831s have been the 257 Robts standby and I used them for years with excellent results, and they still perform as well as anything, but today I like the newer RL-15, H414, 760, CFE-223, and a few others the meter better..It an easy caliber to load for.
