Have just picked up a 5,6x57 Mauser 66 (I know you love em or hate em and I love em!). Shooting RWS factory ammo KS 74 grs and shooting clover leaves!
Roe deer, fox, badger here in Europe and plan on taking it to RSA for springbok next year!
Anyone else on here have any experience with a 5,6x57 ?
Cheers

eagle27While I don't have any experience with the 5.6x57 cartridge itself which I guess will perform similar to a 22-250, 220 Swift, etc., I would caution about the RWS ammo with the KS bullet.
Some of my German friends used these KS (needle point) bullets in various cartridges out here in NZ to shoot red deer, chamois, tahr and feral goats and found them to be fast opening, not holding together well and not always giving the penetration needed on the bigger animals.
For roe deer, fox and badger I imagine the KS bullet would be suitable but for springbok I would be wanting something that would hold together a bit better. Bullet performance will of course depend on the terminal velocity too. If not driven too fast the heavier weight 22 calibre KS bullet is probably satisfactory.
Just a thought.

Charlie64.
Interesting comments and appreciated! I would not want to use them on red deer rather smaller game. Springbok is not that much bigger than a roe buck and I imagine with good placement it should be fine. Having said that I will try them out this winter in Europe and see what they are like before deciding for the RSA trip!

SaeedI have a custom rifle in this caliber.
I prefer the 220 Swift to them
Better still, I built a 22-243 and it is great!
