.223 loading
has anybody here compared the velocity/performance of Varget powder vs H322 in a 20 inch barreled .223 with 50 grainers?

In .223 Varget is to slow in my opinion with the lighter bullets like your talking about here. Another story when you get to say 60 + Gr. bullet size. I would definitely go with the faster powder in that short a barrel length. I used both in my .223 and Varget never produced the velocity or the accuracy of powders like Benchmark or BL-C(2).

I've been using Reloader 7 with my light .223 loads and getting the higher velocities that I wanted.

Benchmark would probably give the highest velocity from a 223 Rem with 50gr bullets.

And While I also like RL7 I originally loaded that mainly for "flashless" loads in a semi-auto.

Try firing two loads of equal velocity from a 223 at twilight or in the dark, one loaded with RL7 and the other loaded with say.... H335 (or W748) and you'll SEE what I mean, though don't be suprised if it takes half an hour (or more) for your night vision to returnSmiler

I have tried the BLC2 and it was absolutely crazy. It had wonderful consistency and the velocity was pure crap. The Varget was at least 100 fps faster in all loads. If fact, with 55 grainers I got almost 3100 fps with 27 grains of Varget and BLC2 was just over 2800. I had same results with 50 grainers. I tried mag primers also and the velocities were more spastic. Out of my 20 inch HR hadi rifle I have gotten 3170 with a max load of Varget behind a 50 grainer and over 3200 with IMR4198. That is why I was wondering about the H322 and it is also an extreme powder.

I'm not sure what's wrong with your BL-C(2) but in my Remington VSSF it gets near 3400 fps the Varget manages just around 3200? I like Varget but in a .223 in has not performed well for me with any bullet lighter than 60 Gr.

While I'm not a guru of the 223 yet (I'm working on it) I've been having good luck with RL15 in the accuracy department with 50gr. V-Max and the 75gr. A-Max, what the velocity? don't have a chrony to check I just like accurate loads and I get them in my 17 Remington, 223, and 308 with the RL15 so I guess that might be the reason I like it due to the fact I can purchase one powder for all my loadings. Is it the best powder? I couldn't tell you but I know several guys at the range that swear by W748! Don't really know due to I have not tried it yet. Later,

W748 is a very good .223 powder. I think you'll find it works a lot better than the RL15 at least in this caliber.
