I looked closely. I know the Roberts should be the 722.
So either someone rebarreld with a 722 barrel. If they did the sights were right on top.
Or maybe they made some that way. Opinions please ?

Well, suppose it could be. Most likely somebody wanting a longer box to seat bullets out more. I personally am quite pleased with my 722 in the Bob. Those of us smitten by the "Why not?" Bug do these things. How does it shoot? And if it shoots good, enjoy.

Is the action just mismarked "721", or is it actually the longer 721 action? Factory mismarkings aren't all that uncommon.

While it could be mismarked a mofre likely option is someone got a .257 barrel and screwed it into the 721 action, if necessary removing a little barrelend until the sights were centered and the headspace correct. Check the serial number with the mo/yr code on the barrel and see if it matches.

I didn't buy the rifle. I was just curious. I have 2 Roberts pining actions now. I would not mind a 722 but they are awfully heavy.

Many moons in the past, Jack O'Connor in Outdoor life as I recall suggested the magazine on the Win. mod. 70 and the Rem 722 was too short to get the ultimate out of a 257 Robts..and he was correct for that matter...

However it spurned many gun nuts to take his advise, after all he was king back then, again rightly so...He even suggested how to accomplish such..

Some replaced the magazines with 30-06 boxes and followers, the mod. 70 was a snap, the 722 somewhat difficult..I know of some old timers that ordered 722 257 Robts barrels from Rem. they used to be more customer friendly as was Win...This is more than likely one of those barrels, All one had to do was index them so the sights were on top..

I would love to find one of those old guns, with the long box and long throats, They shot like the 25-06..A practice I believe in and one that few of todays gun buffs use, just another way of increasing powder space and getting more velocity and less pressure...And contrary to popular belief, always by those who have never tried it, those long throated guns shot with standard factory ammo..bullet jump being contrary to accuracy is baloony..Ive tried it too many times, it was a rumor to start with and a lot expert just decide it must be..happens a lot.

I can't argue with you. Clearly you can get more powder into the case if you can seat the bullet out a ways. My two Roberts rifles are both long actions. But I would like to have one on a short action too. My Ruger has a short throat. Just for kicks I checked to see if I could fit one of my loaded rounds seated close the the lands in my long action Ruger in a short a tion Ruger and it fit just fine. I do stick to 100 grain bullets though. ... Tj3006

In many cases the throats are long (free bored more or less) but the magazines are short, you can lengthen the magazine without changing the outside spec of the 722s or Rugers..My Ruger mod. 77 in 250 Savage has a long throat and I suspect your 257 is chamber with a long throat and short magazine. I do these things just because I like to monkey around with guns.

All that said one of the attributes of the 250-3000 and 257 Robts is its mildness of voice, and lack of recoil, and its ability to kill out of proportion to its ballistics (my opinion) and Improving them in any way may be trying to make a silk purse from a sows ear..

It just doesn't really need to be done, if one wants more juice, get a 25-06 or a 338 Win, whatever...

However, if I had a "Rem 721" with a 722 barrel in 257 Robts, I would take advantage of that long magazine and Seat the bullets out as far as possible and add more powder as the conversion has been done in all liklyhood, take a chamber cast. You could even chamber it out to a 25-06, 257 Wby or whatever..

I built my Roberts on a 96 Mauser that was previously an 8x57.
This magazine length seems perfect, I had it throated only slightly longer than standard and feel like this is the perfect set up for velocity and accuracy, I'm happy others may complain about some aspect of it.

My Little Ruger is the reverse of yours.
Its a long action rifle but the throat is cut short enough that even if I load out to the lands a loaded round will fit in Short action magazine.
I have thought about having a little more throat cut but as long as I stay with a 100 grain bullet it shoots great !
My pet load is a 100 grain triple shock over H414 I get better than MOA and 3100 fps. And that's from a 20 inch barrel.

That's your option TJ, but you can lengthen the neck at any point in time...Do worry about bullet jump, it apparently only exist in some rifles or someone imagination..I been playing with long magazines and long throats for years, ever since I bought my first Brno mod 21, and those rifles are so set up from the factory, they worked so well I just have all my 7x576 set up that way, also works on 87x57 and any 06 based caliber. The 7x57, 250 Savage, 257 Robts seem to work best..
