Hi,

I am researching to get a 7mm-08 bolt action rifle. I am looking at Remington 700 BDL SS and Browning A-bolt Stalker. I am leaning toward the Browning but most of my friends would like to see me buy a Remington.

The A-bolt has the barrel free floated from the factory while the Remington does not have this feature. It seems like free floating the barrel is not really a big deal as I have seen some rifles without free floated barrel shoot very accurately.

Any advice regarding the pros and cons between these 2 rifles will be appreciated.

If you are going to shoot factory ammo then I would go with the Browning with the BOSS! Other wise it is the luck of the buy. Every barrel is different and almost any barrel can shoot good or bad depending on a number of things that go on while being made. Good Luck

I would buy the Remington, it only takes a few minutes to float the barrel, and you have a good adjustable trigger.

I'll second Duane. Go with the Remington.
Although some Brownings are pretty accurate, the Remingtons are famous for their accuracy.

On free floating Rem barrels. I've tried it twice and and accuracy went down - went back to a pressure point and stayed there.

It's really a toss-up as to which will perform better. Get the one you personally like better. You're the one who has to be satisfied, not us.

The Browning will likely have a more expensive appearance, be a little lighter, has a better extractor, and you may or may not like its magazine system. Made in Japan.

The Remington will likely shoot better straight from the box, has a better trigger, and gives you the choice of blind, hinged, or detachable magazine. Made in USA.

You "pay your money and take your choice".

It depends what you want to do. If the same friends you shoot with have tiny groups in their targets I'd go with the remington, but if you are looking for just MOA the anything will be fine.

Buy the Browning. I own 2 Abolts and they are both shooters. Both shoot under .5 MOA consistently with handloads. Another feature you will like is the 60 degree bolt throw. If this is to be a scope-mounted hunting rifle, you might like this feature. The BOSS is a good system, I have one with and another without.

I am sure the Remingtons do fine, I guess I do not know your application. Never had a Remington, so I can not say from personal experience. But I almost bought one a week ago. And the 700 is preferred buy gunsmiths, if you do get a bad one, you can usually find a smith that will know how to fix it. A little more difficult with Brownings.
