6.5-284 hunting results/analysis....
i am pushing 140 gr speer grand-slams at 2780 fps. i ranged the deer (which was bedded down) at 321 yds with my leica 800. wife held 3" high and a bit to the left to account for the 10mph cross wind. hit the deer in the humerous (destroying it) and the bullet entered chest cavity towards the neck. lungs and the apex of the heart were lacerated with no exit wound. i could not find the bullet.

my deer was shot at 200 yds, quartering towards me a bit. bullet hit the shoulder (destroying it), entered the chest/exited the chest leaving a quarter sized hole. the atrium of the heart was hamburger.

with these results, i am a bit leary on shooting an elk more than 225 yds away. what are your thoughts?

May I ask the length barrel and twist rate.

If your concerned about the 140 bullet, try the 160. Or different bullet manufacurer all together.

To much fun...

24" 1x9. i tried 140 gr x-bullets, but they wouldn't group and i had signs of high pressures. i may go with 140gr trophy bonded bear claws or partitions.

My understanding is you would require a faster twist for the heavier bullets. Partitions may be the ticket..
Another option may be to try a 130+ grain (premium bullet). I know you want more weight for the big guys, but how do the 129-130 group?
This option would allow for better shot placement?

The 1-9 twist should stabalize the 130s a whole lot better... Need to shoot and see....
Oh darn more shooting...
To much fun....

Try the 140 grain Nosler. I have had excellent results with this bullet, though not on elk. You could also wait until May when Barnes releases the 130 grain 6.5 triple shock bullet. From the results shown with the current triple shocks, this should be an accurate, reliable bullet.

i was thinking about trying the barnes 130gr x-bullet. if they come out with a triple shock version, i'll definately try them.
