Winchester Pre-64 Model 70 .264 Win Mag Featherweight opinions
Looking like I am going to pick up this rifle in the morning. Any thoughts on this particular rifle and caliber?

I am thinking about taking it apart, keeping all of the original parts to put it back to original in the future, and putting a McMillan stock and a 26" barrel on it and using the hell out of it.

Here are the pictures...

Drum,
I cannot believe you posted this here when you could have contacted your favorite gunsmith/rifle builder in Filer, Idaho. Good 'ol Ray Ray would be a lot of help on this project. I am sure his feelings are hurt and you will not get a Christmas card from him this year.

Shame on you!

I am not a fan of the pre-64s so I can't help you there, but the .264 is a favorite of mine. The only advice I would give is to have the barrel clambered with a throat for the particular bullet you want to use, or at least close. The "standard" .264 reamer has no throat since the original bullets were dual diameter and needed no throat leade. I learned that one the hard way. Then shoot away.

Here are a few pictures, it's going to take some work to get the wood where I want it but I think with the little bit of elbow grease I put into it today it looks a LOT better. Give me a few weeks and I'll have it all shined up and looking great.

I've got a Model 70 Westerner in .264 and it is one of my two favorite rifles. It was my father's gun back in the early 60's and it shoots really well. I did put a Brown Precision stock on it, and that helped accuracy some.

You'll love the .264, and a 26" barrel is where the caliber really shines.

I have a .264 WM and like the chambering. Happens to be on a Mark X action.

Also have a .338 WM on a Pre64 M70 in a McMillan stock. Love it!

I think that configuration in .264 WM would be a winner!

I've been the recipient of one of Ray's highly customized backyard built "sweet thangs". He is truly the master of the file, Dremel tool and the halfassed method of bubbasmithing. Fool me once........

The amazing thing is though, that he's still got some suckers here on AR fooled.

Hey Drummond thats a pretty nice and un molested Pre 64 you got there, I like it.
I like Winchesters M70's( I like a lot of other rifles too but Win are my favorites) Pre 64 and modern production as well. You found a good one there.
I have a range on my farm just south of you a bit (more than a bit I guess and hour plus) if you want to come shoot it and dial it in, plus my gunsmith is just down the road in case you have trouble and he is a number 1 certified Pre 64 nut ( Kevin Weaver of Weaver Rifles).
Its funny that everyone raves about a 130 grain bullet in a 270 but if you have a .264 you just have to shoot 140's?
I say shoot some well constructed 120's in it and take advantage of that flat shooting capability that rifle has.
And no offense Bohica I have a 30/06 that I only shoot 180's in and I could be stepping out of the box and shooting 150's in it!
Just my 2 or 3 cents.
Good luck with your new find.

If you decide to put a 26 inch barrel on it, I have an original Pre-64 Standard M70 barrel (26") for sale. It's in excellent condition inside and out. If interested, send me a Private Message.

Snellstrom,

You have contact info for Weaver? I have a pre-64 in need of some love (currently a 264 as well, but the barrels bent) in the form of a new barrel. I much rather prefer working with someone instate

When you have silly losers like Dogcat, Surestrike and Vapodog, who are nothing more than jealous Zealots of anyone that is successful, and that is all its about...

I have made my fortune in the hunting business, and my custom gun brings high dollar prices. I dont' care if I ever sell another hunt, I don't care if I ever sell another gun but I have a clientele of very good friends that will always hunt with me and folks just keep buying my guns.

At 77 all I care about is how well I rope at the next jackpot or rodeo. There is nothing these guys can do to hurt me as hard as they try, and that is the bone up their keysters..They are internet monkeys that feed off their competition and each other.

Sure Strike, I don't recall every selling you one of my custom guns, If you care to be more specific and not hide behind a fake name it might help or are you just lieing. I have my email below and you can contact me anytime.

I'm not going to post another reply, said my piece and you lieing SOBs can kiss ole spot.

Those of you who would like to see pictures of my work can email me at my below address and I can send them to your email, never learned to post pictures on AR, too busy for that. That is why I never post pictures.

Not sure what happened to you fellows but I bought a rifle from Ray that I love- 416 Rem Mag in a fn action-the stock keeps me hiding it-all my friends want to steal it.

Shoot like the glory of God, 100% function 115 rounds in .

oldWell, Ray sent me a whole bunch of photos depicting his work. Every one of those many is more beautiful than anything I own. Confused How do these threads degenerate into nasty off topic rhetoric so easily? Hope things get better in 2012. Whistlingroger beer
