Dago RedSaw the perfect little blacktail/mulie rifle today
Wow guys, saw something today I would love to have been able to pickup. Went to the local show, guy there had half a dozen guns, interesting variety actually. He had a winchester 71 in 50-110, half octagon barrel built by local shop I know for 2500 bucks, only test fired.
What caught my eye though was a little Ruger 77 tang safety with the international stock chambered in 250-3000. Aside from some little safe wear (looked like some very very minor things on the stock, maybe a touch of rust starting on the bolt) it looked perfect. 18.5" barrel. was a sweet feel in the hands.
guy wanted 575, I don't have extra money, which is good because I probably would have come home with it and got caught before I could slip it into the safe. :-)

Idaho SharpshooterPM me. Got the guy's name and phone #? I'd be real interested in the rugger for one of the grandkids or nieces/nephews.

Thomas JonesThat would be a neat little rifle for sure !
For upstars you could use a 117 grain hornady round nose, and as skill progressed go to a flatter shooting bullet.

I think you're right Red. Supposing the ruger will shoot, it sounds like a winner for black tails and beyond.
My hand painted Tupper Ware Stevens stock will be finished today. I'll replace the stock on the 250-3000[ another Stevens] and send 50 more rounds down the tube Wed.
The barrel is a 24" Shaw but the longer barrel and light weight stock just seem like the right combination for my use.
If you have a Stevens mod.200 or one of the Savage offerings you may at a later more lucrative time consider this approach.
So far it has proven to be a joy. But than I'm easy to please.

seafire/B17GRoger,
I finally got my Shaw 223 barrel on Friday...
it is 26 inches, in a 2 1/2 contour of their's.. heavy magnum it is supposed to be..
it is threaded for a Winchester Model 70....
did you have your barrels blued, or did you leave them in the chrome moly, or did you spray paint them black???
I am considering getting this one Parkerized...and I also want the crown changed...to a target crown...

6.5BRSeafire, you might appreciate this one: Passed but really interested years ago in a Sako L461 vixen barreled to 6.5 TCU handling 100 gr to fit in magazine, and it was made FOR blacktail hunting in CA IIRC. Passed on the gun for sale as the barrel was done in a #1 or so 'pencil diameter' which I could not get excited about. And it was fluted, so it was very 'light' aka 'whippy' in my mind and would heat faster than I would want.
THAT would have been CLOSE to what I wanted around that time, to build a 6TCU like that, BUT since I have moved to the BR rounds. OH, my 7BR feeds all 5 slick as glass in my Model 7 custom Pac-Nor.
Now if you click here:
http://www.bullberry.com/complete.htmlYou will see Ole Fred got it figured out, LIGHT HANDY, FUN, ACCURATE mild recoil and effective.
Sweet little Sako mannlicher carbine in a suitable cartridge (6TCU) for deer to medium ranges. Having shot a TC, recoil is MILD as well as blast. Truth be known, the military could have done well to have done a 6x45 or 6TCU LONG ago in the M16 with good effect. Just my .02.
My it would have give use SO much cheap bulk military brass in a round bigger than a varmint ctg.
I understand blacktails are smallish, so lots of power not needed from what I hear....
