I like the 7-08 very much. It is a great whitetail round and can be made to be exceptional on varmints without undue recoil. Other than that, it's just another caliber... Wink

My 2 cents worth, never thought much about the 7-08 until I started shooting them, now I have 2. Russ

My 7-08 is my go to medium game rifle. Finished at 20" I found that I got nowhere near published velocities with either 120s or 140s with such popular powders as Varget or H4895. Then I tried Viht N550 and haven't looked back.

The 7-08 provides excellent performance with a minimum of fuss and has a wide range of excellent bullets available for it.

I ran across an old (like new) 788 Remington in 7-08 that had of all things an 18 1/2 inch barrel. It was one of the few I've seen that truly liked WW760. With right at a book max load of it with 140 grainers it was clocking a bit over 2,800fps and shooting way better than a factory rifle has a right to. It was the velocity that surprised me with that stubby little barrel. If it worked for ya it'd be a way cheaper powder than N550. I use a lotta VV powders and boy are they proud a them anymore.

Montdoug,

Thanks - I'll try that when I've exhausted my 2lbs of N550.

Kimber Montana in 7/08. Barnes 140 TSX. Rl 19 to get 2900 fps. My little (6.5 lbs fully loaded, scoped and sling) mini mag. Carry it all day one handed, puts em down with authority.

Lads,

An update.

I was at a benefit shoot this past Sunday and ran into the fellow w/the 7/08 for sale. We talked, and he agreed to take $200 for it (NIB)!!!

Since this was a benefit affair, I mentioned to my wife that I won it at a raffle there!!

Now, I've ordered over $250 worth of scope, mount, rings, bases, cases and bullets from Midway!!

Anticipating the arrival of my accessories, and will spend time at the reloading bench and back porch. A report will follow.

I'll re-read all your loading recommendations, and try a sampling.

Mike

I just returned from RSA last week. I used my 7mm-08 on Impala, Baboon and Warthog with great results. I used 160 grain Nosler Partition handloads. I would think that 140 grain factory loads should perform well on North American game. I am a firm believer that the extra bullet weight helps with penetration. Good hunting.

I have been using the 7mm08 for about 15years and it's a light ,fast handling ,hard hitting rifle it's my favorite deer rifle.I've had 3 of them all mod 7 remingtons my new one is the cdl model with a 3x9 leupold. My favorite bullets for deer are hornady 139 SST or interlock and 140 nosler bal tips.Last year I couldn't find any sst so i used sierra 140 btsp and i shot one buck at 180 yards first shot in the shoulder and he ran as if he wasn't hit 80 yards and stopped so i shot again quartering away through the ribcage into the chest then he turned broadside and i shot him behind the shoulder. So I went to where i shot the first time and no blood followed his tracks the 80 yards no blood and no blood from the other 2 shots,so i looked around and 20 yards away he laid dead and there was blood there, poor bullet performance.Every deer I shot with noslers or hornady died in there tracks and there was many.
