Blue Book lists the M61 Smooth bore from, $400.00 for a 10% to $3500.00 for a 98% gun. Hope this helps.

Can you tell us how we can tell the difference?

Keep in mind that blue book estimates are usually very low, I'm pretty sure they published that book for Pawn shop dealers and gun show boys, its certainly to their benefit and they all have one!
Actual value is best found at gunshows and on the internet gun sales, keeping in mind a gun like you describe is worth as much as a person will pay, and the good ones are usually over priced based on the old adgage you can come down on costs but ya can't go up, so the price can always be more or less actual value, so find an average on the internet, ask around what they have sold for recently, and in time if you deal in a lot of guns you actually get a feel for what one is worth or so it seems.
All that said a firearm is only worth what someone will pay for it, and that can sure be complicated..
the .22 mag went for $1,800 and the smoothbore went for $3,300

Never see one in good condition for less than 3K Collector gun if original. lb

And the smoothbore wasn't....it had been drilled and tapped on the receiver (four holes) assumably for a scope..... I further assumed that it was originally a standard .22 rimfire and the (clearly stamped Winchester) barrel was added later in it's history.
