I finally broke down and bought a 6.5

LHeym500I finally broke down and bought a 6.5
It is a 264 WM, Portuguese assembled Model 70 Supergrade. So, the 6.5 Creedmore hype can continue to bugger off.
I think I am going to run 140 grain Swift Aframes or 140 grain Accubonds.
The barrel is 1:9 twist and 26 inches. It would handle 160 grain lead bonded bullets well.
Here is the rifle. I have a big plan for it hopefully in 2026.

Uncle GrinchVery nice rifle, a real classic in a classic caliber. I’d much rather have the .264 than the 6.5 Creed.

bigbullVery nice rifle, I own two 264's and love the caliber certainly puts to rest a lot of the 6.5 hype of today, the 264 has long legs and with the right components there are no 6.5's that can perform better for long range (maybe the 6.5x300 WBY), anyway I run 140 Sierra SBT at close to 3200fps and have taken moose with it, probably overkill for deer except for long range, you need well constructed bullets for shorter ranges, good luck with a classic choice and gun.

swmmy 6.5-06 is long throated and accepts pretty spicy loads. I have been pleased with Barnes TTSX 120 and Nosler Partition 140.
Pretty rifle! best of luck to you.

phurley5I have shot all the bullets in .264 caliber through my two 6.5 PRC's. The one that stands out by far is the 130 grain Barnes TSX. Extremely accurate and fast with my rifles. Might be worth your time to try it. Good Shooting.

DesertRamFactory loaded 130 grain Barnes TTSX work well in my daughter's little 6.5 CM. I shoot a lot of Barnes, and knowing how they like to be pushed hard, I believe those 130s would work even better in your new .264.

SaeedIf you remember the old Oehler chronograph.
We had one set up on a piece of aluminum pipe.
All three sky screens.
We used to put it on a tripod to shoot through.
Well, this time forgot the tripod.
I was driving a BMW 6 series car.
My friends all had SUVs.
So it looked like if we put the chronograph on the roof of my car, it is the perfect night to fire through.
A friend had a custom made 264 Winchester Magnum.
Built by his nephew in Austria.
He fired a shot!
He hit the sky s teens.
The whole thing flew of the roof of my car.
He lost all blood in his face!
Luckily, no damage to the car.
But all 3 sky screens were dead!

p dog shooterThere bare those who have shot their chronographs and those that well.
The Garmin makes that obsolete.

LHeym500The Garmin, Lab Radar, and Magneto Speed tend to negate that risk.

What twist are you using w that bullet? The Branes manual suggests 1:8.5 twist.
I think the PRC round was “standardized” around a 1:8 twist.

Labradar and Magneto do not even come close to the Garmin!
I refuse to use anything that you have to fit on a barrel.
Magneto absolutely refused to work in my indoor range.
308 Winchester factory ammo was giving me something like 143, 168, 171 fps!!
But to be fair they did tell me it wouldn’t work in a tunnel.
The Garmin has become a permanent fixture on our shooting bench.
We love it!

LHeym500They work fine here.
All of three of them have a major short coming being they do not work w shotguns.

SkylineLHeym500.....just did the same thing. Bought a .264 WM but it is the Extreme Weather version of the Mod 70. So far I have only put some 130 Accubonds down the pipe and they are running about .5". Very promising.
I am planning on trying TTSX next and I picked up a few boxes of 140 grain Partitions to try as well

phurley5LHeym500--- I assume both my rifles are the standardized 1:8 twist. One is a Sauer the other a Ruger with 24 inch and 26 inch barrels respectively. I am very pleased with both. Good Shooting.

I looked high and low for an Extreme Weather.
Branes recommends a 1:8.5 twist w 130 TSX. Let us/me know how they shoot.
Thank you
Phurley Thank you

LHeym500 will do. I have 3 of the Extreme Weathers now. The other two are also really accurate, which is why I jumped on the .264 WM when I saw it for sale.

PanchoBeen hunting and shooting one since 1973. My dad gave it to me for HS Graduation. Never needed much else for elk on down. Took it to Africa for plains game twice - worked fine. I've been shooting 130gr Nos Acubond for years. Switched from 125 Partition about the time the Acubond came out.

DLSLHeym, you’re gonna love your .264! I made a longer post on your Accubond vs Scirocco thread so won’t here other than to say I’ve had excellent results with the Barnes 127 grain LRX at 3,220. It’s an extremely accurate bullet and have had great results on everything we’ve shot with it, including a couple big Roosevelt bulls.

LHeym500I saw that. I never grasped the idea of lighter longer monos. I agree they are John Wayne and Clint Eastwood on game.
However, I am concerned. The bullet looks long and Barnes recommends an 1:8 twist w that bullet.
My rifle has the “standard” 1:9 twist.
I have personally not had luck loading them. But that is my failure.

I’m not sure how they’d shoot from a 1 in 9 twist. Mine is 1 in 8 and they shoot ‘lights out’ great. Back before I went to these bullets, the last ones I was shooting in my original barrel were 142 grain ABLR’s and they shot well. I don’t recall particular but I did like them. But I like these 127 LRX’s more!
You’re going to love your .264, it’s a great cartridge in a great rifle.

SaeedHere is my experience with heavy bullets for caliber, and there is no explanation.
I get many 223 rifles, from makers.
Many have 14 twist.
Some of these would shoot 69 grain bullets, others won’t???
Some are of the same brand!!??
30 December 2024, 08:05
LHeym500I have a couple boxes of the 130 grain Accubonds in bound.
Confound holidays! I have time off to play and can’t get base/rings, brass, and bullets delivered.

Michael RobinsonI just bought a couple of boxes of 6.5 mm 156 grain Norma Oryx bullets from Raven Rocks for my Mannlicher-Schoenauers.
Hope they shoot well.
I have used the Norma Oryx bullets in 7 mm and 9.3 mm to good effect on game.
