45-70 shooterWinchester Model 70 243 Target Rifle Question
Recently purchased a 1957 M 70 Target rifle.
While I knew these were made in 30-06 and 300 H&H with several different barrel weights, I have never run across one in 243. It IS NOT the varmint model. It has the Marksman stock, has blocks mounted, is D&T for the Redfield Olympic front sight base and has the heavy (not Bull or Std target) untapered barrel.
Looked in Madis's Winchester book but found nothing. Don't have Rule's book here, so any help I could get nailing this one down would help. Even came with a Canjar Single set trigger (grinnin).
Looks sorta like this one but mine has no iron sights. (pic borrowed off the net)

I paid a bit more than that for the last Pre-64 Target
30-06 I bought and that was at least 15 years ago.

45-70 shooterTrouble sleeping at night ? Hardly .... are you a socialist or communist ? Every study free market economices ? "A sale is a transaction between a buyer and seller at a mutally agreed on price."
Or do you think some Obama appointed committee should set prices on all goods and services. Worked out well for the Soviet Union didn't it ?
Bet you'ld buy if it I put it up for $1200, now would you not ? LOL

Just bought a NIB FN M70 in the real 270 WCF 2008 Commemorative model for $615 with 3X wood, shipped in a new hard case, so I am still sleeping and LAFFIN.

cgbachVery jealous. When I was a kid a friend of my dad had one of those in .220 Swift complete with Lyman tatgetspot. A very neat setup for sure.

vicvanbThe Pre-64 "Competition" rifles came in 3 styles--National Match, Target, and Bull Gun. All had the Marksman stock like the one you pictured. The National Match had the same contoured barrel as the Standard Rifle. The Target (like yours) had the medium heavy barrel. The Bull Gun had the 28 inch extra heavy barrel.
The Varmint had the same barrel as the Target but with a Standard stock.
The Targets were chambered in a variety of cartridges--220 Swift, 257 Roberts, 270, 30-06 etc. There were Special orders in pretty much anything you wanted--I once saw one in 7.92mm, a one-of-a-kind.
After the 243 was introduced in the mid-1950s, Winchester chambered quite a few Target Rifles in that caliber. My brother bought me one new in 1959. The competition guns came in a wooden crate, not the cardboard boxes that all the other styles came in. I put a 15X Unertl 2 inch Target scope on the factory blocks and did in quite a few woodchucks and crows. It was (is) a very accurate rig.
Enjoy your 243 Target Rifle--I have sure enjoyed mine plus a couple of others(257 Roberts and 220 Swift) I picked up over the years.

45-70 shooterMy apology, no nerve hit, I missed the "winkie".
Once I removed 50+ years of crud from the stock it has some nice fiddleback.
Probably steal the Canjar for my 1000 yard "gong gun" (M 70 300 H&H Bull model w/BalVar 6-24) and sell this one as there is really no use for a 12 pound 243 for "walk about" P-dog hunting.
