09 Argentine Mauser

What cartridge was the 09 Argentine Mauser chambered in? Does it have a .473 rim diameter?

Seems like it was a 7. something cartridge. Just curious about feeding with different cartridges.

Yes, 7.65x53. I have one and have only shot it at the range, but it seems to be a very capable cartridge. I have the PPU 174gr. SP.

I meant to be DSC Member...bad typing skills.

The 7.65 cartridge was a Mauser development, unlike the 8mm, which wasn't, and was originally designed for the Belgian 1889. Later used in the 1891 Argentines, and others. It is a great cartridge, and really, there was no need for any subsequent military cartridges. The 7.92 x57 was developed by a German Small Arms Commission to which Mauser was not invited.
The 1909 Argentine actions are very well made, but some can be soft, and I do not use them for magnum cartridges. Some clients want them re heat treated; I usually don't for standard cartridges.

Yep, and that 7.65, if used with today's selection of powders, can get .308-like performance.

My 7.65 is an older, 1891 model, not a '98 Mauser, so I can't load that hot, but it's still a shooter!

War story; I used to shoot 7.62 Nato ammo out of my 09 Argentine carbine. It makes a very short neck, but works fine. (I had access to lots of it and didn't have a 308, at the time.)
Shot it out of an 03 Springfield too; makes a very long 45 case!

Snowman- I rebarreled mine to 6.5-284, and with a bit of grinding and polishing of the follower it feeds like snot on a doorknob.

Thought long and hard about a 6.5X57, but the availability of Lapua brass won out. No regrets.

7.65x53. Argentine and Belgian Mauser cartridge.

I had a commercial FN Mauser action barreled in this cartridge. I still have it, although I've shot it little. I do have lots of ammo for it. I think it's a great cartridge. Every year I plan on using it more. Next season I'll sight it in and use it on deer and hogs.
