250 Savage Dilemna

250 Savage Dilemna

I have a Rem Model 7 in 243, nothing special, just a 243. I was thinking about having it rebarrelled to 250 Savage...

But today I stumbled across a reasonably priced Win PF in 250 Savage (factory chambered). I am seriously considering picking up the Win to get started.

What do you think? Buy or Make?

Rechambering the M-7 in .243 could be more trouble than it's worth especially because the case taper is quite different and might require rail work and follower change etc....

You'll probably buy the Winchester for less than rebarreling and modifying the Rem M-7

I rebarreled a Model 7 from .243 into .250 Savage. The feeding works well without any modification. I guess it boils down to whether you want a factory rifle or want a custom barrel. I put on a 22" Pac-nor barrel with a 1-10 twist. It has a Leupold 2x7 scope with Talley rings. It has a youth stock on it for my son.

Savage is now offering a nice wood or a Stainless rifle in .250 savage. I think its the only factory offering. I know many dont like Savages, but they are shooters.

For a guy with a pristine M-70 in .300 H&H, speaking of Savage is pure blasphemy!

But the 250 has just always drawn me in, but I cant buy a savage...... Never have........

Glad to see you think the 300 is pristine... it truly is..... But I have two in the same condition and one needs to go.

Wish i had a pre 64 in the savage...

The gun writers clearly state Savage ain't making guns like they used to. There ain't no shame in buying the new Savages when they look like this:

I'm seriously considering picking up the 250 Sav. in the stainless/synthetic version as well.

But by all means purchase the Winchester.

If the Winchester is in good condition & the price is good I would buy it. You would come out better money wise.

If the Winchester is used forget it and get the Savage. You'll have a better chance of getting an accurate rifle.

If the Winchester has a 1:10 twist (unlikely?) buy it. Otherwise put a custom tube on the Remington with quick enough rifling to stabilize the longest 120 gr bullet you can find. $0.02

Easy, win70 hands down! The worst that can happen is it doesn't shoot....but maybe a new crown, bed the stock, or an action job....still under the cost of a good quality rebarrel even with extra work being done.

Besides.....then you get to ponder what to do with a spare r700

Not sure what the rush for the Winchester is, seems to me the PF 70's had 1-14" tube, at least a compact did.

I'd rather have a Red Ryder than a 1-14" twist Savage.
