.22 WMR Ammo choices
Evening Guys, My father has a Marlin bolt action .22WMR. Cant remember the model but he bought it back in the 80's and neither of us used it much. At the time a pack of 50 cost around R95 so if we could find ammo we were very lucky indeed. Anyhow I will be going to visit him next weekend to blow the cob webs off and need to get some ammo for it.

I believe the 22 WMR is very popular in the States so am asking you guys for ammo recommendations please. Have not popped into a gunshop recently but we can get Federal, Seller/Bellot and maybe Winchester too etc. Rifle will be used for shooting problem animals, such as Jackal, Warthog etc. Your input will be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hard to go wrong with the Winchester, the several Marlins I had/have all shot it well.
Warthog, hmmm, if you could find some of the Federal 50 grn it might be better. But in any case, a shot in the head is going to kill them.

My Marlin 882 shoots the Win 40 gr HPs the best, and I've tried a lot of different brands and bullet weights. Each rimfire seems picky about what it likes. My 9422M shoots the Win Supreme HPs best.

I have a Marlin bolt action (can't remember the model number and am away from home now) made about the same time. It shoots best with the Win. 40 gr. HPs. They shoot 1.0-1.5 inch groups at 100 yards. I tried the Federal 50 gr. and they did not shoot very well in my rifle. I also shot a lot of ground squirrels with the Federal 40 gr. HPs. They group well out to about 75 yards, and then accuracy seems to go downhill fast.

Each rifle has its own likes or dislikes for ammo. But if I were forced to pick just one it would be the Remington 33 grain stuff.
In my experience is has proven to be the most accurate ammo in a variety of guns.

The best accuracy with the highest velocity I have seen is with RWS 40 grain WMR. However, I haven't seen any for sale in forever, and when it was available it was very expensive.

I find Winchester 40 grain HP (the old standard) to be the next best in nearly every rifle I've tried. The hyper velocity light bullet ammunition is likely too light for some of the medium game you're interested in, and the Federal 50 grainers are both slow and inaccurate in my experience.

Fiocchi 40 grain is also a good choice.

Well, just to stir the pot, I have had the best luck with the Hornady 22 mag ammo.
As someone else said, each rifle will have its own preference.
