Bobby TomekGet a 1:9, and you'll be able to shoot everything from the stubby 40 grainers up through the streamlined 75 grain A-Max. If you want to shoot something heavier/longer, then a 1:8 or even 1:7 is in order. The most common twists you'll find in factory rifles will be 1:12 and 1:14.

stillbeemanGet a 1/12 or a 1/14. That's standard in a 22-250.

LJRivardYou have to decide what weight bullets you will need to use most often. I have a 22-250 with a one in nine twist that will handle bullets from 69 grains to 80 grains just fine, Below 69 grains I can't load to full velocity without the bullets coming apart. They make an interseting smoke trail though. For what it's worth this is with a lapped barrel and moly coated bullets. For a general use varmint rifle I'd go with 1 in 12.

TEANCUMI'm liking a 1 in 12 and use the lighter bullets say 55 grain and less.
If the heavier bullets are more to your fancy you might want to look at a .223 as there has been a wealth of infor available on it with the military applications and some longer range shooters using 69 grainers and up.
I've used 50 grainers in the 22.250 and actually gone down to the 40 grainers in the .223 as the velocity and application of those combos suit my needs the best.

seafire2I have one with a fast twist.. It is an afternarket barrel ( a Pac Nor) with a one in 7 twist...
It can handle ANY of the larger 22 caliber bullets.. the down side is that it is rough on smaller 22 caliber bullets that are fragile, especially when velocities are upped to tradition 22.250 velocities...
I put this on an action that was previously mounted with a 243 barrel.. so it is longer than the traditional 22.250 magazine, which also helps out...
the faster twist can be used with powders in the Varget, RL 15, IMR 4895 and IMR 4064 range and slower...my favorite being IMR 4064 for both velocity and accuracy... even when you would think 4350 would be a better choice...
As TEANCUM pointed out... a 22/250 in a regular 1 in 12 twist, is a different animal than the fast twist 22.250s...
although more book load data is available for the established slower twist, their is more and more stuff out there for the faster twists...
velocity potential is about 150 to 200 fps faster than with the fastest 223 loads with the heavier bullets...
going to a larger case doesn't seem to increase that velocity much, but DOES INCREASE Throat erosion quite a bit.....
I know from being around a few guys who made 22/284s with a fast twists for shooting 80 grain match bullets real fast... the throat life is pretty washed out at about 500 to 600 rounds... at 1000 rounds they have the accuracy of a blind kid with a sling shot...
all stuff to consider.. I have to admit, I have regular twist 22.250s and fast twists... the fast twists are not wasted with bullet weights smaller than 68 grain ( with the exception of the 60 grain V Max and the 60 grain Sierra HP)...
they are also not susceptible to seeing high rates of fire...they are not a day to day rifle for Sage Rats or Prairie Dogs, except at long range on prairie dogs ( where I might shoot 25 rounds or so in an afternoon, when the 223s are seeing 300 plus rounds fired...
hope that might be a little insight to help in aiding your decision...
cheers
