I'm looking into the 22-250 for coyotes and wood chuck hunting here in the northeast, New York to be specific.

I have a Savage 99 in .243 which I inherited and shoots 100 gn Hornady sp .75 moa @ 100 yds.

Here in the northeast the winds can be substantial during coyote season, and the .243 seems to shoot well in the wind.

Will the 22-250 shoot as well in wind?

What rate of twist 1 in 14 or 1 in 12 is best to stabalize a heavier bullet?

Should I go with the 26 inch barrel or 22 in.?

I also like shooting paper and working up loads and like real tiny groups.

I like speed but it doesn't necessarily give you accuracy.

I don't know why but I just want a Savage Predetor with the accutrigger in 22-250.

This is my dilema any suggetions would be greatly appreciated.

Why not just use the .243 ?. It's all you really need .
Rate of twist ; The quicker generally for heaviest bullets .
The .243 will give tiny groups as will the 22-250 .

I own several different weapons Rifles Pistols Bolt semi auto and .
I have a couple of Savage's and they both shoot real well . Aren't much to look at Synthetic stock SS but shoot well !.
So does my Stalkers and Tikka's for that matter .
I'm kind of found of .223 myself yea it's not as fast or quite as flat as my 22-250 . Brass is real abundant and easily reloaded an just about everybody makes a rifle chambered for it !. So ?.

Thing is a couple of my .223's will flat out shoot my 22-250 group size wise that is , So maybe it's why I'm hung on the .223 !?.

You get what ever you like but remember the .243 will do it all to !. With a wee bit more authority to boot !.

Thanks to all for the input, looks like 22in barrel with 1 in 12 will do the trick for the heavier bullets, but if all agree the .243 will do as good a job, maybe I better look at another caliber.

The 1 in 12 twist works with 60 grainers in the .22-250, but it's none too fast. I wouldn't recommend heavier bullets except the old semispitzer 70 grain Speer. There are custom barrels readily available (and convenient to install if you have a Savage) with faster twists.

Hey PeteM, If you want a Savage Preditor, that is plenty of reason to have one,

But try to hang on to the 243Win, because those are some fine groups from a M99. You might want to try some 75gr Sierras (Part# 1510) with some H380 and see if it will do for a Ground Hog blaster.

That Savage Preditor is one fine looking rifle.
