.260 vs 6.5-08, What's the difference?
What is the technical/practical difference, if any, between these two.

I have read that the Hi-Power crowd generally dislikes the .260 in favor of the 6.5-08. Usually the argument centers around the fact that Hi-Power shooting originated the round, but gun writers and Remington took the round and comerciallized it, calling it their own design.

What's the real story? Is one better than the other. I like the ballistics of the round and was thinking of building up a rifle in one of these calibers. Are they interchangable?

Correct me if I'm wrong......the 260 is a 6.5x308. Different chamber reamers and dies must specify one or the other. I am currently loading a Savage/Pac-Nor 6.5x308 AI (or 260 AI). My dies and chamber read 6.5x308 AI. I neck down 308 Lapua cases to 6.5 in my Redding 7-08 and 260 dies. Great cartridge. Mine is a s/shot...1/8" twist...26" x 1.230" straight, no taper pipe. In fact yesterday, I fireformed some Fed match brass from 260 to my AI chamber. I use this rifle for p/dogs, from 800-1100 yds. Past that, I use a Savage 110 Tactical 300 win mag.

IN the real world, they both are the same.

Involve Ego ( the Benchrest Crowd) or some TECH guys love affair with miniscule statistics, then their is a lot of diffence. However, none that has to do with performance.

I made a joke at the range one day when someone asked me what caliber of rifle I was shooting, and I told him I was shooting a Winchester 6 mm Medium Short Mag. His eyes lit up and he was asking is that another version still of the Winchester Super Short Mag?

I told him it was actually one of their older ones. He went away saying he was going to have to check that one out.

A friend was there smerking and asked me what the hell I was talking about. My answer: a 243.

Hello Armed in Utah,

You were smart getting it in 1 to 8" twist. The 1 in 9" doesn't seem to handle the heavier bullets, above 139gr. very well. We've still got a lot to learn about the 6.5 caliber I guess.
Best wishes.
