"Standard" 220 Swift Load...
I have a 220 Swift under construction. I seem to remember reading several times about a 4064 load that is a standard starting place for the 220 (kind of like 38.0 of H380 for the 22/250). Can anyone help me with a proven starter in the 50-55 gr. bullet range?

Oh yeah, 24" Shilen bbl and Ruger action. It will be a walking around varmit rifle.

Thanks

Mine like 41.0 grains of any brand of 4350, with Sisk .223" 55 grain "Express" bullets and Federal, Norma, Winchester, or RWS primers. (we're talking 3/4 moa or better 10-SHOT groups here.)

I have 2 loads that my Swift likes.
38gr IMR4064 52gr Sierra HPBT
44gr IMR4831 55gr Nosler Bal Tip
Both of these shoot under half inch at 100yds.
GOOD LUCK and GOOD SHOOTING!!!

Here are a couple of loads that should work well for you.

40 grain B tip or V max 42-44 grains H-414
Win brass Win primer

50 grain B tip or V max 40-44 grains of H-414 or 37-40 of IMR 4064
Win brass Win primer

My fave load though is...
55 B tip with 44 grains of H-4831
Win brass Win primer
This load has slew many a varmint and shoots itty bitty groups. It is somewhat mild at 3680 fps but it is consistant all year round.

Excellent choice in the .220 Swift some call it " The orignal death ray" I agree with them fully Big Grin

I have shot out a few .220 barrels, H414 and 4064 are the standards. I would also try RL15 with standard 50-55 grain bullets. It is a great round, last time I made mine into a .220 AI. Actually if I didn't have so much brass, I'd make up a .22-243 Middlestead due to brass availability and the semi-rimmed case.

The "standard" load in 50s was 37.5 gr 4064+any good 55gr bullet, believe it was mentioned in an early Speer manual.Still works today even better in my 40X with 52-53 gr HPBR bullets.

My standard is:

Winchester brass
CCI primer
52 gr Hornady BTHP Match or....
50 gr Nosler Bal Tip
38.0 gr IMR-3031

CAUTION!!!!!!

Start a tad lower on the charge weight as I've seen this load be too hot in another rifle.

Another recommendation for the .220 Swift, don't go with the standard 1-14 twist, I went to 1-12 on my last barrel on my buddy-gunsmith's recommendation. It outshoots any I've ever had with 50-55's and a lot better with 60's. I shot a typical group with it this morning, .303 at 100 with 47 gr of H414, 3990 fps. This is in a .220 AI, don't try this in a standard .220, 42.5-43 is about right. If I were you I'd reconsider the 24 in. barrel and put a 26 on it. I've had both and mine is a sporter weight 26 in, hangs like a rock the extra weight helps and picks up some speed. You'll find the .220 usually shoots better the hotter you load it in my experience, but I've never seen a reason to not load it hot. For volume shooting, at normal speeds, I shoot a .223.
