Just read Marty's post re/his new Ruger and intro to the Hornet. Hope my experiences are not his!!

Cannot get the Ruger to group at 100yds, even using the loads you folks suggested to Marty.

Wondering if I might have gotten one of those bad barrels Ruger used in the last millenium. If this is the case, are there replacement barrels available for less than the cost of a whole new rifle?? Much as I enjoy supporting the US firearms industry with regular purchases... the well is running dry

If there are more suggestions for load combinations other than those posted to Marty, I'm willing to give them a try... Oh alright... I'll just have to shoot some more .

The Hornet is perfect for 3 seasons here in the UP and many skunks, coons, porkys, zombie red squirrels and young Yetis have fallen to it.

Any experiences common to my problem would be appreciated. Wish I had another load for Marty to try, but you can see why I'm not proposing one.

Had one that I sent back to Ruger; no improvement. Sent it back for a replacement and traded the replacement off for another gun immediately. That worked! (what's this stuff about you Uppers succeeding from Michigan?)

Jim Kobe has had great luck with the match 77/22's by setting them back and rechambering them, with a match crown. Granted, ne also threads them into the receivers properly.

I would spend the money to do that before you replace the barrel completely.

Take a look at the south shore of the UP and you'll see that those peninsulas are actually teats that the lower has been sucking on for years!!! You're close enough to Detroit to know what a financial black hole that is!!

Nobody cares about us until we cut a tree or shoot an extra deer for the winter - then boy.. do they howl (well, the tree-huggers and PETA pukes do).

We had a contest for the new UP slogan... I came in second with "Welcome to the UP... Spend money, then leave". The winner was "Go away and leave us alone".

The bridge is wired and the mines are set along the Wisconsinners border - now if we could only deal w/those Canadians!!!

Sorry... it's a rainy day in paradise and I'm still about my Hornet. Usually I save my rants for Specialty Pistols!!

Thanks for the info on the barrels, lads. I'll try a few more loads first, then perhaps send the gun out.

I have had a couple 77/22 Hornets, they all seemed to shoot fine for a while then went south after a while. I played with bedding and other things but eventually came to the conclusion that it is a head space issue. The multipiece bolt seems to wear overtime and things go south. I have solved it on my rifles by head spacing on the shoulder instead of the rim. I expand the necks out to 6mm with a .243 die then size them until the bolt closes with slight pressure. Mine shoot ¾ to 1 inch groups regularly. Not bench rest but pretty good for a 0 – 200 yard cartridge.

Just my 2 cents.....

You might check with Randy at Connecticut Precision Chambering. He has had great success with his work on the Ruger 77/22, both rimfire and Hornet.

if ya rebarrel, ya may want to consider the 17 Hornet that Ruger & Horandy will be launching..

Have you had any trigger work done?

After I installed a Timney Spring & Sear kit into my Ruger Hornet, the accuracy improved by quite a bit.

You can have a trigger job, new barrel properly installed, target crown, and have the sloppy action tightened up or blue printed and you will have a $500 rifle that might shoot (mine didn't).

Or you can spend similar total amount for an Anschutz or old Kimber, and have a $1200 rifle that will shoot (mine do).

Anschutz hornets and Kimber are getting hard to find but they do show up on gunbroker and similat=r sites.

I have a Ruger 77/.22 Hornet and so far no accuracy issues. Shoots just fine! Mine has a silver colored bolt (Newer Ruger 77/.22 Hornet) and not the blued bolt version, they offered years ago.

Well, there may be a glimmer of hope yet. According to an NRA e-mail news item I just read about 15 minutes ago, Congress just passed a bill to do away with U.S. federal requirements for export and import permits on gun-realted items with a value of $500 and less.

Now we'll whave to see if O'jerk-off signs it into law. It's close enough to the election that he may....

This is a little late, but hope it helps. Mine originally had the 20" blued barrel with sloppy chamber. I bought a take off barrel from James Calhoon that was 24" and stainless, from a VHZ when he does his conversion to .19 Calhoon. Had it shipped to Randy at CC, where he punched it to a K, and installed. Prices from both were very reasonable, and the stainless barrel looks good with the blued action/walnut stock. HTH

Really? It had not occured to me that the little action might be adaptable to the .221. How do they deal with the magazine, which would appear difficult to modify to successfully hold the Fireball? Also, the Firball's SAAMI operating pressures are significantly higher than the Hornet, so is there any problem using what is essentially a rimfire action with it? The non-threaded barrel would make me a little skittish with a high-intensity cartridge. While I'm initally a bit dubious, I'd love to learn more on how satisfactory this conversion works out.

I had one of the very early ones. Accuracy was piss poor. Rechambered to K-Hornet, vast improvement !
