Please could someone let me know the twist rate of the Rem 700VSL in .223

Have read that they used to be 1:12 now 1:9

Anybody shed some light please? Will these twist rates both stabilise a light weight bullet out of a 20" barrel???

best way to find out what you have is to use a bore brush wpaped with a cleaning patch so its pretty tight mark the cleaning rod on top and at the begining of the barrel place the first mark push the rod in until it makes one revolution. make the second mark
measure the distance from the start mark to the second mark and that should tell you the twist for that barrel

I believe you will find the "sporting rifle..." version of the 700 to be a 12 twist and utilizing lighter weight bullets to create higher velocity-velocity sells you know. Not a thing wrong with velocity, but velocity is not an equivalent to accuracy. The PSS, LE/Mil version of the 700 uses a 9 twist to enable using the 68-77 grain bullets. I will say though, I have seen more than a few 12 twist barrels shoot quite well out to the 300 yard range with the lighter bullets, but not at the 600 yard range.

For your own amusement take a box of 20rds of SS109 ammo to the range.

I'll bet you can't put a single hole in a 4ft plywood square
at 200yds....

For varmints you want lighter bullets anyway, 40, 50, 55gr.

(Personally, like 40gr bullets in front of a max charge of benchmark in my 1:12" twist VSSF)

Heavier bullets in the 223 are people emulating the military in trying (hopelessly) to convert the 223 into an effective anti-personel round that it has never been, nor will ever be.
and IMO they defeat the purpose in buying a 223 instead of a 22-250 or a 243win.

The 1:12" will stabilize anything up to the 60gr partition.

According to the Remington Catalog for a VLS or aVSF it is 1/12. I hope this helps.
