Here's a little bit of info/data from my new barreled 6.5-06 as I got a chance to shoot some test loads yesterday. 3 shot groups @100yds.

57.5 grains of IMR7828 with a Sierra 120 grain Game King. .520 outside to outside no velocity, as there was not enough light for the screens.

55 Grains of RL22 same bullet .815 outside to outside, velocity 3052 with an extreme spread of 23.

Really showing a lot of promise with only 20 rounds thru it. I had this one twisted 11" so I could shoot primarily the 120 grain or there about bullets.

Sweet! I'm waiting on my 6.5-06, but have a 8" twist for 140 grainers. Nice stuff!

Jerry, with an 11 twist, try IMR or AA4350. My 6.5-06AI likes it better than the slower powders for accuracy. I use 53 grains of AA4350 with a 120 Ballistic Tip and get 3000fps and excellent groups. I know it is a little over book. Usually .7" or better.

Thanks Larry. I'll give 4350 a shot, it has always been a go to powder for me in 270 Win, and 375 H&H to name a couple.

Just shot another 3 shot group @ 100 yds 54 grains of IMR4831 120 grain Bullet measured .550 outside to outside.

John Barsness reported exception accuracy from a custom 6.5-06 with H1000, FWIW.

Since groups are typically measured center to center, which is hard to do, best to measure outside to INSIDE, which will automatically give you a center to center value.

dpcd: So if I use the method you suggest, the groups would be even smaller, no? Since these are hunting rifles and not bench rest, I have always measured like this just for the general idea. But if your way's better, why not do it?

dpcd's "way" is not necessarily better but it is the time honored way of measuring bullet groups. If we all stick to the same way then we get true comparative results.

Yes your groups will be smaller in measurement and then are related to what others publish as their group size. Does it make any difference to a hunting rifle, no, but when we talk of the point of impact of a bullet we mean the centre, not the outside edge of the bullet hole.

Outside to inside of the furtherest apart bullet holes gives you the true group size centre to centre.

Outside to outside and subtract the diameter of the bullet. Either way works just fine.

For target shooting, I have always measured outside to outside, and subtracted the bullet diameter whatever. The Point is, you can see how good this barrel shoots. Measure anyway you please, fact is it shoots very nicely.

+1 It is easier to make sure you have the greatest distance that way. But whatever works, works.
