Hey guys a friend of mine is selling a winchester model 70XTR chambere in 7mm mauser the gun looks good but I've noticed that the bolt does not have the same serial number as the barrel. The last 3 numbers are diffrent does this matter as I've heard that it can cause problems. Any info would be great.

I would ask why, and probably should have the headspace checked. Unless the lugs were lapped with the old bolt it shouldn't really make a difference in practical terms since the bolts are not built custom for the receiver.

The why is because it was from an estate sale.
Thanks for the info.

There's probably another M70 from that estate sale running around somewhere with a bolt that bears the SN of your rifle.

Lots of people remove the bolts from rifles and store them seperately. I've never seen any good come of this practice.

Rifles headspace on the bolt face so to speak..You definatly need to have the headspace checked..You don't have a problem if you do that, but if it has the wrong bolt then it definatly needs to be fixed before you shoot it.

That may take turning a thread off the barrel and rechambering that difference..At any rate is not a costly process, at least locally its not. It may also take a tad of inletting.

Why not contact whoever conducted the sale and see if there were other M70's particularly in 7x57 sold and if it's possible to contact the other buyer(s).

I have one that I grab a lot to go hunting with... I love it..

I wouldn't worry too much about the bolt not being the original if you can't run it down..

just adjust your die to accomodate it and you'll be fine... that is what I have done on some surplus 8mm Mausers and that has not presented a problem... one of the local gunsmith's I use told me to do that... and he works on Mausers predominantly...

Beeman. Maybe you should make that any M70 that hada 30-06 shell base. That covers a lot of ground. Older .243 on the long action, any round based on the 30-06, I think you get the picture.
On another note, you don't have enough money to get me to part with my M70 Featherweight in 7x57. That rifle is very kind to this beat up old fart.
