FasteelShot the new Steyr 6.5x55
Had bought a 6.5 before Christmas, used but in nice shape, just haven't had a nice day to shoot it.
Loaded 3 charges of IMR 4895 for the 85gr Sierra and 3 charges of Hybrid 100 with the 120gr Ballistic Tip.
Scope is a 4.5x14 Leupold. First time I'd ever tried this two stage trigger, pretty much a pleasure to shoot. Didn't group the 85gr all that well but did give a nice clover leaf with the 120gr.
I'm going back to the range to finish shooting the rest of my test loads tomorrow. FS

MikeyBI hear good things about those Steyrs. I bet it'd shoot 140's well too, I believe they're 1:7.8" twist barrels. Any pics? Are they really as ugly as they look?

390ishbuy some reloader 22 and a box of hornady 140 grain a-max bullets. i have the same rifle as the original poster, but not in stainless. one of my favorite rifles.

smithrjdTry some RL-19 and 130g Accubonds. Clover leafs from my ProHunter in 6.5X57. Fast becoming my go to rifle, as accurate if not more so than my Sako Av in 6.5X55.

smithrjdNot sure about a Steyr ProHunter in 6.5X55, but mine in 6.5X57 has a very long throat. Most bullets will not hit the lands I have some old old Barnes 165g RN's will have to try them. They are about the longest bullets I have ever seen. I would guess the Steyrs in 6.5X55 have a long throat as well.

BuliwyfI bet those 165 gr Barnes are long. Thanks for the post. Do you happen to know if the Winchester M70 Classic was factory throated for the 160 or 140?

FasteelIt is kind of amazing how much room there is in the magazine for long bullets, these 120's I loaded were a good 1/4 inch away from the end of the mag.FS

Dr. LouI have never checked the throat of an American made rifle chambered for the 6.5x55, but all those made in Europe that I have owned/played with all have long throats to accept the long bullets. I would make an educated guess that American made rifles are also chambered accordingly. Lou

390ishmy styer does not have a short throat, that is for sure. i can seat to near the lands while still having room in the magazine, however. i really like these rifles. should have bought one in 25-06 when i still had the money.
