What can it do with 90gr and 100gr from a 22" barrel at sane pressure. What sort of COL and hence what sort of action is required.

Perhaps the new 6.5x47 Lapua is a 'modern' European equivalent....

The 250-3000AI and 25 Souper perform in the same general neighborhood as the handloaded 257 Roberts, all other factors being equal.

I had 2 rifles in 250-3000AI, built after I'd read how POA said that it was 1 of his best efforts. The sharp should didn't feed well in my Ruger 77 RSI, so I bought a new 77 RSI barrel in 250-3000 and rechambered it to 25 Souper, which feeds fine. The 250-3000AI work fine in my Savage 99 CD, but I wanted more performance out of that rifle, so I rechambered it to 25-284.

If the 250-3000AI moves you, save your $$, build a bigger gun cabinet, and go build 1.

Ditto to what Jeff said.

Feed it Re-15 and any good 100 grain bullet, and you'll have an excellent medium-range deer cartridge.

My shooting partner and I use .257's for extended shooting periods. His is a .25 Souper and mine is a 25 wssm. Any cartride is this class is close to optimum bore volume. For high volume shooting the .250 AI would work well. The .257 Wby and .25-06 etc move closer to big game rounds.

I just decided and ordered my barrel for my 250AI from Pacnor, it will be a 22" fluted barrel and will put it on a 700SA. When completed should be right at 5 lbs. But it will be 4-6 months before it will be completed.

l know of only one chap on this side of the pond that uses that round and he likes it. l think it gets used for flat'nin bambi most of the time, and l don't think it causes too much body damage either.

What components are you using to get a 5 lbs. rifle with a 22" flutted barrel on a Remington 700 SA? I would seem that any barrel that had a larger enough contour to be flutted would put you over the 5 lbs. mark, once installed with the action, stock, mounts, and scope.

I have a matched pair of Remington 700 Mountain Rifles; 700 CM short actions, 700 LSS-MR/Ti barrels, and 700 Ti stocks. They are light, but not 5 lbs. light.

Thanks for the replies. The feeding might be an issue.

Buy any short action Stevens 200, re-barrel with the barrel of your choice(mine is Douglas),put in a SSS trigger, paint the stock or replace with laminated, and you will have a fine shooting varmint rifle(if you use a heavy contour) or deer rifle(if you use a sporter weight). I set mine up as a varmint piece and have never been sorry.

About a year ago, I bought a new Rem 700 CDL short action rifle, and sent it off to a gunsmith who removed the 7-08 barrel and installed a Shilen quarterbore barrel chambered in 250AI. I don't have the load info handy, but the accrracy from it is excepetional; like 6 out of 8 loads tried were 1/2" for three shots at 100 yards. Bullets were the 90 grain Sierra HPBT, Speer's 87 grain TNT, Speer's 87 grain SP, and Hornady's 75 grain V-Max.
I really haven't fed any ammo thru the magazine yet, but I'll probably shoot it single shot anyway. I will use the rifle for varmints only.
My next quarterbore will be a 25 Souper, right after....several others, the most important of which is a 6x45..

After working with the .300 Savage I've concluded that the .308 Winchester should never have been invented. The .300 case is over all a better design. Likewise, a .250 Savage Improved is basically just a necked down .300 Savage, and is what the .250 should have been to begin with. GO FOR IT.

The magazine rails and feed ramp always need to be a little more carefully done for a shorter/fatter cartridge, but a .250 IMP is not really so radical as to make dependable feeding a significant difficulty.
