I am looking at purchasing the following rifle and optics from a private seller where I live:

Savage Model 12 FVSS 22-250. It has a fluted stainless steel barrel, accutrigger and the seller says only about 300 rounds through it.

The scope on it is a BSA Platinum 6/24 w/Varmint reticle.

He is wanting $625 for the setup. Does this sound reasonable? I looked at a blue book of gun values at Cabela's and it said the gun only at 90% condition is $495. What are you all seeing in terms of relation between blue book value and actual market value?

run away fast.....the rifle may be worth the blue book price but the scope IMO is not worth a dime!

I should also note, he claims a gun shop offered him $550. Does this sound like a good price? I know the gun shop would obviously try to make a profit over and above $550 so I am wondering what they'd sell it for????

There are dealers out there that will special order and resell at cost plus 10%. Find one, get a quote on a new rifle and go from there. Don't forget to figure in sales tax, shipping, and transfer. You won't be paying tax or shipping on a private sale.

You make a great point. I actually started calculating taxes, shipping, FFL tranfer etc...and most savings buying on gunbroker.com or elsewhere gets eaten up pretty quickly. Thanks for the input.

True, unless they already have a buyer lined up they just won't go above 50%. At least they won't aroung here. It's kind of irratating when you sell them one and it's only on the shelf for 3 days.

There's a guy here in the classifieds forum trying to establish stocking dealer status with Savage who is is offering to sell new ones with little markup. As long as he is out of state for you there will be no tax only shipping and a transfer fee. I agree with the rest that $625 is way too high especially considering the scope is a POS that I wouldn't put on a rifle if someone gave it to me for free.

IMO it would seem a wash as far as pricing goes Tax Shipping Transfer fee ? You'll need to decide on that aspect .

If it were myself I'd prefer a " NEW ONE " . A custom unit or a specialty model year manufacturer is a whole different circumstance !.

Don't know much about Savage rifles except that they could use about two dollars more in labor for finishing. I do know that every BSA scope I have had experience with was not much more than crap.

Savage rifles work, are accurate, are less expensive and if you are looking for a bigger bang for the buck, you should go there. (in my opinion)

I've only had one BSA scope. It was a stop-gap purchase and I didn't keep it long. I do have to say that it did what it was supposed to while I had it.
I know a fellow that was building up a bench rifle and run out of money before he got to the scope. He shot a season of bench rest with a 36X BSA. His only complaint was that the crosshairs were too course. He did get rid of it before the next season, however.

Yes, that is the exact gun. After looking around a lot of places for both used and new I believe it was a good deal. I didn't have to pay taxes, shipping, transfer fees etc...and I didn't really want to spend more than $600 so new was completely out of the question for what I wanted to spend. I can always upgrade this scope later. With new I would also have to purchase a scope, which adds even more cost. I am happy with my decision and the rifle will serve it's intended use. Coyotes watch out!!!

D, Savages are great rifles that shoot extremely well but will not increase in value unless the price of new ones goes up, or, they stop making them. There are just too many built. I ahve a Savage 110FP in 223 that I will probably never sell. It is just too accurate. Enjoy the gun!
