The rimmed cases can produce some head-aches with magazine followers and feeding.

Dont know about a bolt gun, but I've been wanting a 5.6x52R single shot--very cool round and the choice of 2 bullets. Not too much to think about.

CoolAm thinkin' on a 2 or 3 round stacked instead of staggered(?) mag.,from a 788 Rem. or one from a 340 Savage set in the mag box with some kind of filler to hold it solid,,open the bolt face & extractor.Ought to work!I was goimg to ream my .223 handi-rifle for the Zipper, but not enought meat in the right places,,tho I might go .22/303 or .22 krag ,If those single shot Russians Rem. sells comes in .22 Hornet I may do the 5.6x52R on thatbeer

I have a 219 zipper on a smokeless rollingblock action. Heavy barrel, pistolgrip stock old weaver 10x scope. old school varmint rifle, and shoots very well too!

I'd support you on the 219 Zipper on a Mauser action.

I always look at those load manuals that list them, and the one's being used are Mausers with a 29 inch barrel, chambered in one, or the Donaldson Wasp.

the nostalgia on how cool one would be has always really intrigued me. I just need to get off my duff and build one.

.....apparently zippers work well in lee enfield actions as well, already rimmed and 10 round mag, or 5 if need be.

I can't see any reason why a .219 Zipper or a .22 Savage H.P wouldn't work in a Remington 788 or Savage Model 340. I had the same idea years ago using a .30-30 Remington M-788 rebarreled to .219 Zipper with a 1-in-12" twist.

As much as I love both those rifles,,,and I do,,,they are not mausers,,I only have 2 rifles that are NOT Mausers,,but they are so absolutely accurate,I can't bear to part with them,,had I been dedicated to Mausers before I had bought them I wouldn't own them now dancing

I shoot the 5.6 x 52R in a drilling. Downside is the lack of ammo...basically only SP 70 grain loads from either S and B or Norma. Lutz Moeller developed a 50 grain solid copper with loads pushing MV to 3400 fps with acceptable pressures. This would be solidly in 223 territory.

If you look in the Frank De Haas "BOLT ACTION RIFLES" most of the '98s are in zipper improved.
I think my copy is about a 1984 version.

CoolJonP,,,that Moeller load sounds GREAT!!,,,what range of game is that intended??
YUMA,,most of the Donaldson wasps on '98's I have seen have been set-back Zipper/ Zip./imp. chambers.
Hey Sea,,I'd love an old hi-wall or stevens in Zipper!!!!!

Why is it that I think of Bill Clinton when anyone mentions the .219 Zipper?

Pattern 14 Enfield?

Rimmed cartridge.

Mauser...
damn near.

DeHaas built a singleshot Wasp on a shortened Enfield.

Big Grin well TC I never thought of the '14!!because it has been a 'coons age since I've seen one and even longer since I've seen one for sale!!!!!
And I sure as hell wouldn't shorten one!!!too valuable for bigbore building! BOOM
By the way,, are you a tin can man?

If you go with a .228 bore, you might want to consider a rate of twist quicker than 1-12". The only two sources of .228 bullets here in the States is Hornady and Buffalo Arms. The Hornady is a spire point and hence a little long to fully stabilize in a 1-12" twist. We shooters of 1899 Savages in .22 HiPower find that accuracy suffers. 1-10" would be better. Buffalo sells a 60 gr. bullet in .228, as well as a 70 grain. The 60's shoot ok but I don't know how they would perform on deer size game. Their 70gr. isn't much more accurate than the Hornady. Old stocks of Speer and Sisk .228 70gr. are shorter with a more round nose. They perform beautifully in the Savages but have disappeared from the market. Norma and S&B factory ammo is accurate (short 70 gr. bullets) but the Norma stuff is costly and, in my guns anyway, the S&B cases don't hold up for repeated loadings.

The way to go for cases is to start with .25-35's. Be also aware that W-W .25-35 brass is a little larger in head diameter than Norma and S&B. (We think due to a Euro spec phenomenon) Something to keep in mind when you have the chamber cut. Pick a case brand that you will stick with and have the chamber sized accordingly.

Just some friendly advise from someone who's been down the .22 HiPower road for a while!

SmilerHEY "G",,IN MY BOOK nothing is as usefull as imperical evidence!!I was going to go with S&B stuff as in other calibers,I find it to be top grade,,but I will bow to experience. As WW brass is always my 1st choice when possible,,most likely I will lay in a supply.I was thinkin' on a 10 twist if it would matter condidering it will be in a Spanish small ring with it's pressure limitation,,as maybe I can't get the 70 gr. to do 3000fps with-in the pressure limit of the action,,but in a long bbl. I believe it can,,and as the action was made in 1924,I think the upper limit of 48,000CUP is do-able,,but as always I will shoot( ha!!)for lower numbers pressure-wise.In it's 7x57 incarnation,,I shot modern yugo. made fodder that is notoriously hot,,without any hi-pressure signs of any kind.I may go with .224 bullets/bore for ease of deer applicable bullet selection IE nosler 60's,,horny's 70's,,TBBC 55's,,speer 70's,,WW's 64's.I always wanted a 99 in .22 H-P!!!! dancing

Sounds like a good project to me. Compair the Savage High Power (5.6X52R) with the 5.6X50Rmag and other rimmed cartridges. http://www.stevespages.com/page8d.htm
I am building a cadet rifle into a 5.6X50Rmag varmit rifle. Factory ammo for both the .22 high power and the 5.6X50R is aviailable through S&B. One of the Contender pistol guys (Mike Bellum, I beleive) has published some load data for both cartridges.

Please keep us up to date on the project.
