Is the earlier Remington 760 rifles chambered in .257 roberts strong enough for the newer .257 +P factory loadings offered by Hornady ?

I would say Yes! That same action was chambered for 280Rem and 30-06.

The M760 was chambered for cartridges with higher chamber pressures than the .280 and .30-06, both of which are actually on the mild side. I had one in .270, and they were chambered for the .308. If the rifle is in good condition it should handle the +P Roberts fine.

.280 Rem - 60,000 psi
.30-06 - 60,000 psi
.308 WCF - 62,000 psi
.270 WCF - 65,000 psi
.257 +P - 58,000 psi

I know where there is a 760 in .244 Remington....but have never seen one in the .257 Roberts.....must be some collectors item for sure!

They do bring a premium. I think a few were made in 223 also. Very hard to find.

I was aware of the .222 chambering but didn't know that it was also chambered in .223!

They were made in a fair number of chamberings. I have no idea how many, but have owned 760s in .300 Savage, .35 Remington, .244 Remington, .270 Winchester, .308 Winchester, and .30-06 Springfield. Tried to get Robar to convert one of the .35s to .35 Whelen for me, but after keeping it several months and doing nothing, they said it couldn't be done and gave it back to me.

Apparently Remington didn't believe that.....

One of my good friends has a 760 chambered in 223, so they do exist.

Local shop had one in .223 recently. I thought is was neat but couldn't for the life of me think of a use for it so I elected to buy one in .35 Rem instead. At $150 it was a no brainer considering that included a Redfield Receiver sight and the SN places it as a First Year production rifle.

I don't think that came about until Remington took the 35 Whelen out of the wildcat status, so it was chambered in the later pump...don't believe the 760 was.

Remington has their latest pump in 223 and it takes M16 mags to boot.

Yes, the 760 was chambered in 35 Whelan. I haven't seen a 760 in .257 Roberts for 45 years. That's a real gem.

I think the 35W came along in the first year of the 7600. Splitting hairs in one way but the 7600 is a moderately different rifle that the 760.
